Although they are one of the biggest teams in England and Europe, Liverpool had their share of heavy defeats.
Throughout history, this team was part of some of the most notable matches full of twists, like the UEFA Champions League in Istanbul against Milan.
Liverpool often knows from round to round, from match to match, to give its fans a roller coaster of feeling, winning and losing in some amazing ways.
Aston Villa 7 – 2 Liverpool (2020)
The players of Liverpool, the English champions at the time, arrived in Birmingham to meet Aston Villa. And what the Reds experienced at Villa Park they will want to forget as soon as possible, but unfortunately, these defeats are remembered forever.
Aston Villa inflicted on Liverpool one of the biggest defeats in history and the biggest since the Premiership was played. Liverpool lost by five goals to Stoke (6:1) and Manchester City (5:0) but conceded fewer goals then.
The home team took the lead in the 4th minute with a goal by Ollie Watkins, and the same player scored in the 22nd minute to make it 2:0. Ten minutes later, Mohamed Salah reduced the lead, but Villa scored two more goals by the end of the half.
John McGinn scored in the 35th minute for 3:1, and Watkins ended the half of his life with the third goal in the 39th minute. Aston Villa crowned the fantastic performance with the fifth goal in the 55th minute, and the scorer was Ross Barkley.
Salah reduced the score to 2:5 in the 60th, and Jack Grealish made it 7:2 with goals in the 66th and 75th. Watkins could have scored his fourth goal in the game in the 85th minute, but he hit the crossbar.
Stoke City 6 – 1 Liverpool (2015)
It can be said that the 2014/15 season was very bad for Liverpool. Not only did they finish in sixth place in the Premier League, but at the end of the season, perhaps the biggest legend, a symbol of the club, Steven Gerrard, left them.
On May 24, 2015, at the “Britannia” stadium, it was expected that the team from Liverpool would beat Stoke and thus provide an honourable farewell to its legend from the red jersey. However, everything went wrong for them, and after 45 minutes, the scoreboard read 5:0 for the home team.
In the end, the score was 6:1, the only goal from Liverpool scored by the captain. Steven Gerrard then left Liverpool after 17 years and continued his career in the USA as a member of the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Manchester City 5 – 0 Liverpool (2017)
It was an even match, a tense derby until the end of the first half when unfortunate Mane made a terrible foul and got a red card.
Liverpool was already down one goal, and after the red card, they conceded a second goal. In the second half, Manchester City easily controlled the match and scored three more goals in the fierce rival net.
Coventry City 5 – 1 Liverpool (1992)
Although the host was in terrible form, without a win in 11 matches in a row, that winter, right before Christmas, they gave the best present to their fans.
Coventry, the underdog, had a huge, confident lead of 3 goals before Liverpool put one. However, in the end, Liverpool conceded two more goals, and the final result was 5:1 for Coventry.
Manchester United 4 – 0 Liverpool (2003)
Of course, this list couldn’t be completed if we don’t mention one of the many unbelievable matches in the biggest English derby between Manchester United and Liverpool.
In the season 2003/04, when the “Red Devils” were dominating the league, Liverpool was hoping to break the party at Old Trafford, but didn’t succeed in it, instead was heavily defeated 4:0.
Yet again, Liverpool got a red card as Sami Hyypia made a penalty and got a red card. At the end of the match, Liverpool conceded one more goal from a penalty and two beautiful goals from Giggs and Solskjaer
