Xavi criticizes Barcelona defense: “We concede too much”

Too many goals in the back of the net is a problem for Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernández who’s looking at urgent steps to solidify his backline.

In the Barcelona derby with RCD Espanyol last weekend, the Blaugrana came from behind to hold on to a draw despite opening the scoring through Spaniard youngster Pedri.

The problem seems to recur even in the previous league clash with Atlético Madrid.

“The loss could have been a step backwards. It is not so much with the point. This is a complicated field here the leader lost. In many phases, we have played very well, and we must take advantage of them. It could have been won, and in the end, it could perfectly well have been lost. The defeat would have been unfair”, says Xavi Hernandez, according to El Pais.

The problem Barcelona faces is conceding loads of goals which could hamper their chances of winning a good trophy, according to Xavi’s analysis of his team.

“We concede too much; the first goal is from a ball exit in which we don’t need to risk, and the second is a bad reading of the defensive line. They are our mistakes, and then we lacked effectiveness when we dominated; we must be self-critical”, he added.

Barcelona appears to have solved the deteriorating forward full of youngsters by signing high profile names like Adama Traore and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but what still lingers in the defence.

In the Spanish La Liga, Barcelona has conceded over 27 goals, 13 since the arrival of Xavi from the Qatari top flight.
