Why did Tottenham Hotspur appoint Ange Postecoglou as their Manager?
Tottenham Hotspur has finally found a new manager after a long and stressful search. Ange Postecoglou, the former Celtic manager who guided the Scottish club to a domestic treble last season, has been appointed.
The Australian manager, 57, signed a four-year deal with Spurs, making him the first manager from his nation to lead a Premier League team. But why did Tottenham pick Postecoglou above the other applicants, and what qualities can he provide the team?
Postecoglou’s optimistic outlook and quick, aggressive style of play were key factors in Tottenham’s decision to hire him.
Postecoglou has “a strong track record of developing players and an understanding of the importance of the link from the academy – everything that is important to our club,” according to Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.
Levy expressed his admiration for Postecoglou’s approach to football, which has made Celtic “a breathlessly entertaining watch on the way to a clean sweep of domestic trophies.”
Playing Style
Possession, pressing, and high-intensity play are the cornerstones of Postecoglou’s style, which he has successfully incorporated into a number of clubs and national teams.
With Brisbane Roar, where he won two A-League championships, he instituted a 4-3-3 shape that earned the nickname “Roarcelona” due to its similarities to Barcelona’s playing method. In 2015, he played a key role in Australia winning their first Asian Cup with a captivating and daring style of play.
He next moved to Japan, where in 2019, he and Yokohama F. Marinos won the J-League, shattering numerous records in the process.
Postecoglou’s most recent accomplishment came at Celtic when he took over a team facing a significant rebuild after losing its dominance to archrivals Rangers.
Postecoglou turned things around and led Celtic to a historic treble, winning the Scottish Premiership, the Scottish Cup, and the Scottish League Cup despite a poor start and some criticism from supporters and commentators.
Massive Rebuild at Spurs
Tottenham, who had been searching for a manager to revive their identity and ambition following a disastrous period under Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo, and Antonio Conte, were drawn to Postecoglou’s success at Celtic.
Spurs haven’t won an essential trophy since 2008, and they have failed to earn a spot in the Champions League for the past two years. They also don’t know what will happen with their star striker Harry Kane, who has stated a desire to leave the team to win trophies.
Postecoglou will have a lot of work to do at Tottenham, but he has proven that he can adapt to different environments and cultures and is not afraid of challenges.
Fans of Tottenham will be hoping that Postecoglou can bring back the enthusiasm and flare that they experienced when Mauricio Pochettino took them to the Champions League final in 2019.
Additionally, Postecoglou will be responsible for nurturing young players from the academy and making intelligent decisions in the transfer market.
Will Ange Postecoglou be able to end Tottenham Hotspur’s trophy drought? Comment and let us know.
