The team’s last appearance in the UEFA Champions League group stages was in the 2010/11 season, drawn in the same group alongside FC Barcelona, Rubin Kazan, and FC Copenhagen.

French football heavyweights Marseille qualified for the group stages, paired with Eintracht Frankfurt, Tottenham Hotspur, and Sporting CP in Group D.

Marseille finished third behind RC Lens and league Champions Paris Saint-Germain.
