What is Manchester United’s biggest win?
Manchester United have been around since 1878, when they were founded under the name Newton Heath, and in the 145 years since then, there have been some memorable victories.
Their biggest ever win came in 1956 in what was then known as the European Cup (now the Champions league).
Drawn at home against the Belgian side Anderlecht, the game had to be played at the home of United’s neighbours, Manchester City, Maine Road, because Old Trafford had not yet been equipped with floodlights for what was an evening game.
United had already went two nil away in Brussels in the first-leg, with goals from Dennis Viollet and Tommy Taylor, and were in no mood to spare the visitors in the return fixture.
Viollet found the net four times (including a first-half hat-trick), whilst Taylor grabbed three for himself. Billy Whelan netted a brace and John Berry also got on the scoresheet as United ran riot, putting ten past their hapless opponents, to complete a 12 – 0 aggregate victory.
All four players were part of the Busby Babes team that was to be involved with the fateful Munich air crash 18 months later. Taylor and Whelan were tragically killed in the crash, and, although Berry survived, he would never play football again. Only Viollet was able to resume his playing career.
In their Newton Heath days, United three times won league matches by nine goal matches – they beat Wolves in the old Division One in 1892 by the scoreline of 10 – 1, and then playing in Division Two, they put nine goals past Walsall in 1895, and beat Darwen by the same scoreline three years later.
More recently, they have twice won 9 – 0 in the Premier League, the joint highest biggest score ever.
The first time came in March 1995 when Ipswich Town were the visitors to Old Trafford.
Roy Keane got things underway by opening the scoring in the 15th minute, before striker Andy Cole took over, adding two more before half-time. Manager Alex Ferguson urged his side to score more goals in the second-half, and they responded to his challenge in style.
Eight minutes after the restart Cole completed his hat-trick, and then Mark Hughes chipped in with a brace.
Cole got his fourth, and then Paul Ince got in on the act. There was still time for Cole to get his fifth of the night before the final whistle.
With the United fans calling for a tenth as the match neared its end, the travelling support chanted “we want one.”
Southampton have the unhappy distinction of being the only Premier League side to have conceded nine goals twice (they had earlier suffered the indignity of being thrashed at home by Leicester in October 2019).
And they and their fans will not want to remember their trip to Old Trafford in February 2021.
United were four up by half-time. Aaron Wan-Bissaka got things underway with a rare goal for him, and then Marcus Rashford added a second. Jan Bednarek made things worse than for his side by putting through his own net, before Edison Cavani put his mark on proceedings.
The home side were in no mood to take their foot off the pedal in the second-half, with Anthony Martial, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes from the penalty spot piling on the pressure.
To make matters worse for the Saints, they conceded two more goals in injury time, Martial doubling up and substitute Daniel James adding the 9th.
