West Ham not giving up on Ward-Prowse after Southampton reject £30m bid

Despite a stunning U-turn on Tuesday night, West Ham remain interested in Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse.

According to reports, the Hammers are considering whether to resume talks with the Saints about a prospective move for the midfielder, but a fee is still a long way off at this moment.

West Ham was understood to have left the negotiation table after Southampton rejected a £30 million deal.

Southampton’s assessment for the 28-year-old is closer to £40 million, and for a deal to be completed, they would have to make a price sacrifice.

David Moyes, who guided the London club to its first title in 43 years in June, is desperate to have Ward-Prowse in his squad by the end of this week so that he can prepare for West Ham’s English Premier League opening against Bournemouth in 11 days.

Despite being cash-rich with the sale of Declan Rice to city rivals Arsenal for an English record initial transfer cost of £100 million, West Ham has yet to strengthen Moyes’ first team.

Ward-Prowse is widely regarded as English football’s most skilled dead-ball specialist, and his return has progressively increased over his 11 Premier League seasons, with 43 goals and assists in the last three seasons.

Moyes has also praised the midfielder’s injury record, with the 28-year-old starting 150 of Southampton’s last 152 League games.

Ward-Prowse had nine goals and four assists in 38 Premier League games last season. “It’s nice, of course, this is a club that has meant a lot to me,” the free-kick specialist remarked after Southampton’s 4-4 draw with Liverpool on the final day of the season.

“You never know what is going to happen in the future. To play a part in not maintaining that Premier League status hurts me, but I’m sure this club will be back in the future.”

Following their relegation to the Championship, Southampton has maintained a stern stance on player sales, refusing to sell premium assets such as Ward-Prowse and Romeo Lavia unless the move benefits both the player and the club.

Rasmus Ankersen, Southampton’s co-owner and head of football strategy, has rejected two “low-ball” proposals from West Ham for Ward-Prowse, as well as a second offer of £41 million from Liverpool for Lavia.
