West Ham complete the signings of Harry Maguire and James Ward-Prowse
West Ham United has completed the signings of England international Harry Maguire and James Ward-Prowse from Manchester United and Southampton, respectively.
West Ham and Manchester United reached a preliminary agreement to transfer defender Harry Maguire.
The deal, valued at approximately £30 million, has been agreed by both clubs. While there are no anticipated issues with negotiating personal terms, the finer points of Maguire’s departure from United still require attention.
After having a £20 million offer for Harry Maguire turned down last month, West Ham’s hopes of securing the player’s signature from Manchester United have grown cautiously optimistic.
On Monday, The Athletic revealed that West Ham had submitted a £30 million bid for Maguire, and that offer has been agreed upon.
Following the sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105 million, David Moyes’ team is actively looking to strengthen their squad. Similarly, Maguire aims to rejuvenate his career after finding himself lower on the priority list under the management of Erik ten Hag.
Last season, the 30-year-old only featured in 16 Premier League games, as Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and Victor Lindelof were given preference in the central defensive positions. The English footballer was also stripped of the Manchester United captaincy earlier this summer.
Despite having a contract that extends until 2025, Maguire had initially intended to remain and compete for his spot at Old Trafford. However, England’s manager Gareth Southgate has hinted that his limited playing time at United could negatively impact his international career.
Maguire’s consistently lacklustre performances have resulted in unfavourable reactions from both online and offline fans. He has frequently faced boos from supporters at Old Trafford.
In a bid to further bolster their squad, West Ham United is aiming to enhance their lineup by securing the services of the promising player James Ward-Prowse from Southampton.
West Ham and Southampton have successfully concluded negotiations for acquiring midfielder James Ward-Prowse. The transfer is valued at the same £30 million amount turned down last month, but the payment terms and conditions have been adjusted more favorably for Southampton.
Agreements have been reached on personal terms, and Ward-Prowse is scheduled to undergo his medical assessment starting Thursday.
The acquisitions of Maguire and Ward-Prowse will be interpreted as a show of support for Moyes from the club’s perspective.
Tensions have arisen between the Scottish manager and West Ham’s recently appointed technical director, Tim Steidten, regarding transfer targets. Moyes has been advocating for established Premier League players, whereas Steidten has been exploring younger prospects from Europe.
The pursuit of Ward-Prowse almost collapsed last week, as West Ham was reluctant to exceed the £30 million valuation for the 28-year-old midfielder.
Southampton had been seeking a higher fee for their captain, and several sources indicated at the beginning of this week that a deal appeared improbable. But the deal has been agreed upon as West Ham aim for a deep run in the European Competition.
