Nigerian Napoli forward Victor Osimhen is in Belgium even as he prepares for club football in 2021 after sustaining a shoulder injury during Nigeria’s AFCON Qualifiers against Sierra Leone.
The young forward who made a shock move last summer from Lille to the Italian side, showed a little bit of his class, helping Napoli across all competitions before sustaining the injury in the qualifiers.
In Belgium, Osimhen is currently in rehabilitation as he moves to the centre in the city of Antwerp, meaning he’s expected to spend the whole of Christmas in the Belgian city.
Head coach Gennaro Gattuso has been without his recruit even as Napoli suffer dwindling form across all competitions. Although in his absence, Gattuso decided to employ a three-man offensive wall.
Bottom line, Osimhen is expected to be on the bench in Napoli’s first game of 2021 and he’ll probably come on as a substitute depending on how the situation goes from now till the end of Christmas.
According to Calcio Napoli, the Nigerian forward will be monitored by the club’s medical team day and night to help fastrack his quick recovery for the first-team action before the second game of 2021, even though is expected to hit the bench in the game against Cagliari
The doubts of a successful career in Italy
Some top football pundits in Italy has begun to doubt the huge sum of money spent on acquiring the services of the young footballer. In their eyes, he is not doing so well as he expected to perform.
He did score lots of goals during the pre-season, but he is yet to translate that into the league. Moving to Napoli, the club had to make huge decisions before he was signed.
Although it is still early to criticize his performance, Osimhen was expected to hit the ground running. In all, he wasn’t poor at all, but the level of expectation wasn’t attained.
Returning from the shoulder injury, Osimhen is expected to right the wrongs left towards the end of 2020. He is expected to lead Napoli’s attack for the big challenge ahead.
