The Premier Soccer League is the highest men’s Professional Soccer League in South Africa, contested by over 16 teams across the country.
The PSL is considered one of the best domestic leagues in Africa in terms of organization, competition, revenue and popularity.
South African clubs have also gone on to make names in African football club competition.
The likes of Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates are some notable names on the African continent.
In the South African Premier Soccer League, notable names include Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Bidvest Wits (defunct), SuperSport United, etc.
The PSL is all known for its high number of European, Brazilian and Asian Footballers playing for some notable clubs in the league.
After the CAF Champions League, the PSL is regarded as the richest and one of the most valuable Leagues on the African continent with heavy commercial sponsorship deals.
The league is organized and controlled by Absa. It is fed into by the National First Division or the GladAfrica Championship.

1. AmaZulu FC
AmaZulu FC is a professional soccer club from South Africa, based in Durban City, North Durban.
AmaZulu founded 89 years ago is regarded as one of the oldest soccer clubs in South Africa.
Currently, the owner of the club has set out a plan which would see the club at the top echelon of African Football within the next twelve years.
Even though the club may not be at the highest level with the likes of Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, etc. There are still chances they’ll climb up the ladder for years to come.

2. Baroka
Baroka is a professional soccer club from South Africa that plays in the Premier Soccer League, the country’s highest level of club soccer competition.
Baroka made a statement in the country after getting to the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup in 2011.
Baroka has since continued to maintain its status as a PSL club since its promotion to the elite division.
After getting promoted in 2016, Baroka finished 15th on the league table, retaining their status as a PSL club after the promotion/relegation playoffs.
Since then, the club has managed to stay afloat, though it hasn’t finished at the top half of the league.

3. Black Leopards
Black Leopards is a PSL club based in Thohoyandou, Polokwane.
Nicknamed Lidoda Duvha (The day will come), the club is regarded as one of the average sides in the Premier Soccer League that has managed to stay afloat in the league
The club is not at the high class compared to teams like Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, etc.
Most seasons, Black Leopards struggle to stay afloat in the top division.
However, they are also a good side with a bunch of average players.
They play at the Thohoyandou Stadium.
4. Bloemfontein Celtic
Bloemfontein Celtic F.C. or Blo Celtic is a professional soccer club based in Bloemfontein and plays in the South African Premier Soccer League.
The club one of the top-performing clubs in the Division in the past few seasons.
With a large fanbase in Free State, the club is a household name in the country’s, top division.
Some notable performance was a Telkom Knockout cup in 2012 and Runners up in the 2019/2020 Nedbank Cup.

Cape Town City is currently on a mission to become one of the best clubs in the country and probably the most popular within the Cape Town region.
They were Champions of the Telkom Knockout in 2016.

Nicknamed the lords, Chiefs are a top side and have continued to produce impressive results year after year.
On every match day, the club draws some of the highest matchday attendance which could be between 11 to 14 thousand spectators.
Based in Soweto, the club shares a common rivalry with fellow Sowetan club Orlando Pirates called the Sowetan Derby.
Kaizer Chiefs is one of the most successful clubs in South Africa.

Maritzburg United is one average PSL sides ready to spring up surprises every matchday.
Based in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, the club has not had the best outing in the division but has managed to stay afloat since returning from relegation.
During 2019/2020, the team finished 7th.
10. Moroka Swallows Football Club
Moroka Swallows is a professional men’s soccer team based in Soweto and are familiar with clubs like Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs.
Plays it’s home matches at the Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg.
The club maintained a record as one of the teams that have never been relegated from the Premier Soccer League not until its relegation at the end of 2014–15.
11. Orlando Pirates
Orlando Pirates is Soccer Club from Soweto, Johannesburg in South Africa.
Pirates do have a reach pedigree in the local league and are regarded as one of the most successful teams alongside Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs.
Pirates are rivals to Kaizer Chiefs in a derby called the Sowetan Derby.
Pirates are also one of the two South African clubs that have won the CAF Champions League in the past. Pirates won it in 1995 while Sundowns did it in 2016.
The club has won a total of nine PSL titles.
12. Mamelodi Sundowns
Mamelodi Sundowns is top and one of the most successful clubs in South Africa that plays in the Premier Soccer League.
The club has become a major force within and outside South Africa in the past few seasons.
Sundowns earned a reputation on the continent after Pitso Mosimane led the team to victory during the 2016 CAF Champions League.
Since then, the club has never failed to progress beyond the group stages.
Right now, they’re one of the big three including Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates.
They are the record winners of PSL with over ten titles.
Nicknamed the Brazilians, Sundowns boast of several players that played in the team and now based overseas.

13. Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch formed in 2016 is a PSL club and the first located in Stellenbosch South Africa.
Stellenbosch started its campaign in the elite league in 2020 which was a remarkable achievement in the history of the club.
14. SuperSport United
United owned by Television giants Super Sports TV plays in the Premier Soccer League.
The club has won the PSL three times.

TS Galaxy is a club that plays in the PSL.
A remarkable achievement in the history of the club was the defeat of Kaizer Chiefs to lift the Nedbank Cup in 2019.
TS Galaxy got the rights to play in the Premier Soccer League after purchasing the playing rights of Highlands Park.
17. Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila Football Club
TTM is a club based in Thohoyandou, Limpopo South Africa that plays in the PSL.
The club purchased the PSL status of Bidvest Wits.
Premier Soccer League format in 2020/2021 season
The league has sixteen clubs. It runs similar to how European football leagues operates, the regular season runs from August to May.
Each team plays over thirty matches on a home and away basis. A winner is awarded three points while a draw receives a single point.
At the end of every season, the team finishing top is crowned Champions of League while the bottom-placed team is automatically relegated from the division.
The team on the 15th position plays a mini playoff with the team that finished second and third in the National First Division to determine who the other slot.
The first and second automatically qualify for the CAF Champions League while the third goes to the CAF Confederations Cup.
