Top five Major football leagues in Europe Statistically Ranked in 2021

The European top five Major Leagues have continued live up to expectations when it comes to entertainment.

 

For years, nations like England, Spain and Germany has continued to maintain the high level of competition.

 

Moving over to Spain, Real Madrid and Barcelona continue to shine.

 

Barcelona on the other hand has failed to hit the ground running for a while. Recall, the club lost heavily to Bayern Munich during the 2019/2020 UCL quarter-finals.

 

This article outlines the best leagues in Europe according to their recent performance across all UEFA club competitions like the Champions League, Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup using the UEFA Country Coefficient.

 

1. Premier League – England

 

The Premier League in England is arguably regarded as the best league in not just Europe, but the world.

 

The league owing to its competitive nature has continued to rake in higher Television revenue than other leagues on the continent.

 

Although, when it comes to fan participation during league matchdays, the German Bundesliga tops the chart with most matchday attendance across Europe.

 

Notable names like Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal have continued to fly the English flag higher in recent years.

 

Recall, before Bayern Munich covid-19 European football domination, four English clubs got to finals of the two most prestigious club competition in Europe (UEL and the UCL).

 

Chelsea won the Europa League in 2019 after beating rivals Arsenal in the final.

 

Liverpool also won the champions league, beating then Mauricio Pochettino tutored side Tottenham Hotspur.

 

England also had over five teams in the UCL during Manchester United’s Triumph in the Europa League.

 

Although this is not new as Spain has continued to hold such a hugh number of teams.

 

 

The Spanish La Liga continues to make the headline lately with constant progress to the knockout stages of UEFA club competitions.

 

Clubs like Real Madrid are the most successful team when it comes to the UEFA Champions League with over 13 times in the history of the competition.

 

The recent was a back to back win of the continental top trophy in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

 

Barcelona is another team with a top star in Lionel Messi who currently carries the team across all competitions.

 

Barcelona has also won a decent number of UCL trophies in the past.

 

2. La Liga – Spain

 

The Spanish La Liga continues to make the headline lately with constant progress to the knockout stages of UEFA club competitions.

They’re are also the current Champions of the competition after beating Italian Serie A side Inter Milan in the final.

 

Sevilla eliminated notable teams like Manchester United en route to the final.

 

This year, Sevilla advanced to the UCL knockout round and could not participate in the UEL.

 

This year, surprise Spanish teams like Granada CF and Villarreal CF got the semi-finals.

3. Serie A – Italy

 

Although, this may come as a surprise to many. But you cannot rule out the efforts of Italian teams in European club competitions.

 

Juventus have continued to surpass the quarter-finals of the UCL. Although they lost out to Portuguese Primeira Liga side FC Porto in the quarter-finals, though most goals scored on the road.

 

 

Last season, Inter Milan got to the final of the UEL, losing to Sevilla in the finals.

Lazio is another side, led by a free-scoring Ciro Immobile and AC Milan.

 

 

Serie A may not be having much-needed attention as it should be. But the league has continued to flourish in UEFA competitions.

 

In recent years when the Milan clubs where at the top echelon of European club football, Serie A was the most followed and was regarded as the best due to its competitive nature as then.

 

In 2021, there’s a new resurgence as AC Milan, Inter Milan, AS Roma, Napoli and Lazio look to be brighter than the giants Juventus.

4. 1. Bundesliga – Germany

 

Although it could be regarded as a one-man show. The Bundesliga has continued to shine its light across European competitions.

Bayern Munich is the current Champions of Europe.

 

Another team that has held their stake including new improved Borussia Dortmund with star names like Erling Braut Haaland (The goal boy) Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham, Thorgan Hazard and Marco Reus.

 

Borussia Monchengladbach, Frankfurt and Bayer 04 Leverkusen complete the list.

 

5. Ligue 1 – France

 

French football recently got into the scenes with impressive form on the continent as Paris Saint Germain and Olympique Lyon were impressive.

 

 

Even though Paris Saint Germain appears to be the best and the most dominant in recent years. PSG have not failed to get through to the knockout round alongside Olympique Lyon.

 

 

A few years back when AS Monaco had the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva, Thomas Lemar, Falcao, etc. They used to challenge the capital club in the domestic scene.

 

 

In the Champions League, AS Monaco also got to knockout stages before an eventual elimination.

 

Ligue 1 has gradually received an increased number of followers and TV viewership after notable names like Neymar, Mauricio Pochettino, Fabregas joined teams in the league.

6. Premier League – Russia

 

The Russian Premier League have had its fair share of the championship league, even though Russian clubs are not at the same level as their counterparts in England and Spain.

Spartak Moscow and Zenit St Petersburg have long dominated the domestic scene.

7. Primeira Liga – Portugal

Porto also won the UCL back in the 2003–04 competition.

 

SL Benfica, Sporting CP have also continued to raise the Portuguese flag.

8. First Division A (Pro League) – Belgium

9. Premier League – Ukraine

 

The Ukrainian Premier League is another top League when it comes to Europe top teams like Dinamo Kyiv, FC Shakhtar Donetsk.

10. Super Lig – Turkey

 

The Turkish Super Lig is another entertaining league in Europe with an ever-increasing number of entrants in European club competitions.

In recent years, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce were the best on the continent when it comes to Turkish teams.
