They’re a good side and tried to play compact – Ifeanyi Anaemena on Rivers United win over Bloem Celtics

Rivers United defender Ifeanyi Anaemena reflects on his sides shock win over South African side Bloem Celtics in CAF Confederations Cup.

The pride of Rivers scored in the 71st and 83rd minutes through Godwin Aguda and Fortune Omoniwari to inch closer to the group stage of the competition.

Speaking after the game, Anaemena revealed his side’s plan was to keep clean sheet before considering other possible options.

“They’re a good side and tried to play compact, but we were resilient and our game plan was to keep a clean sheet in the first half and return in the second for goals.” Anaemena told reporters after the game.

The former Enyimba FC defender made the switch to the Rivers State club few seasons ago, and have since found a starting shirt in the side tutored by Stanley Eguma.

The pride of Rivers as they are also known, are expected to return home with same momentum when the South African team return for the second leg in a fourth night.

Rivers United will have one more hurdle to cross if they beat Bloemfontein Celtics to the playoffs.

The last time they got to the group stage of the competition, they finished third in the group consisting of teams like KCCA.
