The best Championship managers good enough to manage in the Premier League
The life of a Premier League manager can be precarious. Already six of the teams have changed bosses since the start of the season.
However, whilst there may be a temptation to look abroad or to another Premier League club for a replacement, there is also talent available in the Championship as Southampton illustrated when they poached Nathan Jones from Luton Town to replace Ralph Hasenhüttl.
Here are some other names which could be ready for the step-up.
Vincent Kompany (Burnley)
The former Manchester City captain has only been in charge of Burnley for five months, but, despite selling a number of their top players following their relegation last season, he has them leading the Championship table and playing a brand of attractive football for which they were not known under the stewardship of Sean Dyche.
His first managerial stint in charge of Anderlecht did not go so well, but, based on what he has achieved with Burnley so far, he has also been linked with the vacant Belgium manager’s job.
Jon Dahl Tomasson (Blackburn Rovers)
Blackburn Rovers have been one of the surprise teams in the Championship this season, due to the work done by Tomasson, the former Danish international who played with Newcastle United for one season.
If he can keep Blackburn in the play-off picture until the end of the season, his stock will rise and he will be in the conversation when it comes to Premier League jobs.
Michael Carrick (Middlesbrough)
Carrick’s progress at Middlesbrough is being watched with interest. This is the former Manchester United and England star’s first managerial role, having previously been an assistant to Ole Gunner Solskjaer (and briefly interim head coach) at Old Trafford.
If there are signs that he can have the same effect off the pitch as he previously managed on it, there could well be a Premier League club prepared to give him a chance at some stage.
Rob Edwards (Luton Town)
Edwards introduction to life in the Championship was a brutal one. He was only appointed manager by Watford at the end of last season following their relegation, but lasted barely 12 games in charge before he was sacked by the Pozzo family.
Yet, having steered Forest Green Rovers to the League title last season, Edwards definitely has some managerial capabilities, which is why Luton Town appointed him when Jones departed for Southampton.
Liam Rosenior (Hull City)
Liam Rosenior has already lasted longer in charge of Hull than his father Leroy did when he was appointed Torquay United (sacked after just 10 minutes). Although this is his first managerial role, he has already experienced a lot during his time with Derby acting as assistant to Wayne Rooney as the club struggled to stay in the Championship despite significant financial issues off the field, and then briefly succeeding him in an interim role.
He inherited a team at the wrong end of the table, but, if he can turn their fortunes around, he can expect his profile to rise.
