It has been a fierce battle between two giants from the same famous city battling for honours at the national level.

The league in Scotland has continued to grow even though it might be at the same level as the English Premier League in England, its neighbours.

The league have transformed into Numerous formats with the recent adoption being the Scottish Premiership after it was first established in 1890 as the Scottish Football League.


The country’s top division shares an iconic history behind as the inaugural league season was awarded to two teams.


The 1890 season was awarded to Dumbarton and Rangers after the two sides finished equal on points in the regular season and could not determine a winner in a separate playoff.


In a total of transformations, the Scottish Premiership have undergone over seven changes before it was finally settled to its current format and name.


Since the establishment of the league, Celtic FC and Rangers FC have emerged as winners more times than any other team in the division.


Although Heart of Midlothian, Aberdeen, and Hibernian also boost of winning more than two Scottish Premiership titles despite Rangers and Celtic dominating performance in the history of the competition in the country.


This further established a fierce rivalry between Rangers and Celtic known as the Old Firm derby played between the two clubs be it in the league or any other domestic football Competitions.

Rangers have won the Scottish League over 55th times in its history of participation in the Scottish League.


But in the era of the Premiership, Celtic are the most successful with eight titles.


During the early years of football in the country, the Rangers were top contenders including winning the inaugural edition of the competition alongside Dumbarton after the organizing body decided to award the two teams the same.


After that historic achievement, the Glasgow based club continued to follow up with its progress, winning more titles to add to its trophy cabinet in the early years before it underwent the second transformation.


As history counts, Rangers is the fourth oldest football club in the country and has also stamped its foot in the domestic league.


Golden Era

Rangers began winning the title in its inaugural season as joint Champions.


After the first win, Rangers waited another eight years in 1899 to add a second.


After the triumph in 1899, the club went on to lift the title in three consecutive seasons between 1899 to 1902, making four straight seasons.


This was the time the club announced its arrival in the Scottish scene.


The club continued with this success 2010–11 season after which the club went on hiatus.


However coming back stronger, the Glasgow based club won the Scottish Premiership for the first time since its establishment as the newly adopted league in the 2020–21 football season, eclipsing Celtic’s unending dominance.


Rangers have won numerous trophies in its history including the Scottish FA Cup 33 times, League Cup 27 And Challenge Cup once.


Today, Rangers FC stand out as the most successful football club in Scotland in terms of the domestic league won with over fifty-five trophies with the recent coming from the 2020/2021 season after a long wait for the silverware.



Celtic is a professional football club based in Glasgow and competes in the Scottish Premiership and are the most successful in the Premiership Era.

It has been a dominating performance for the Celts in the past few seasons or simply in the modern era of football in the country.


In total, the club has won over 51 league titles and are behind Rangers FC with 55 as the second-best team in the country in terms of numbers of league titles won.


The club began to win the Championship in 1892–93 and went to lift it in two successive seasons after an impressive outing in 1893-94 season.


Celtic also won a record six straight league titles in the early 1890s after the back to back league title win.


Other notable trophies include the Scottish FA Cup won 40 times and 19 League Cups.


The club also enjoyed continental success, winning the European Cup in 1966–67.


Since the start of the Premiership Era, Celtic has been in a commanding position, winning the first seven league titles before Ranger’s intervention in the 2020/2021 season, ending a nine-year wait for the title.



Aberdeen football club is a Scottish professional football club based in Aberdeen and competes in the top flight.


On the list of Scottish League winners, Aberdeen is fourth on the all-time Champions list with four titles won over the period it has completed in the top flight.


The overwhelming dominance of Rangers and Celtic have completely ruled out the chances of other teams claiming the title.


The club has also finished as runners up of the league on about seventeen occasions and third-place finish nine times.


In modern football in Scotland, only Rangers and Celtic have consistently won the title ahead of any other side in the division although clubs like Heart of Midlothian and Motherwell came close to winning on few occasions.


Aberdeen Golden Era

The club from Aberdeen began its title-winning journey after enjoying a brilliant season 1954–55 to lift its first crown.


However, before the club could have another hand on the trophy, it took another twenty-five years plus before it came through.


This was in the 1979–80 season.


Aberdeen did not stop from there, the club went to make it back to wins to complete its fourth title.


Since then, Aberdeen has failed to make a mark even in modern football in Scotland amid Celtic and Rangers dominance.


The club has also won seven FA Cups and six League Cups in the past.


Heart of Midlothian Football Club

Hearts are a Scottish professional football club based in the capital city of Edinburgh and compete in the Premiership.


Hearts is one of the other three clubs that have won the league title outside the other two dominating clubs in the top flight.


Hearts began its journey in the fight for a league and was awarded after an excellent campaign in 1894–95, waiting for another two years to add a second in 1896–97.


After the league triumph, the team went on hiatus but returned in 1957–58 to lift its third title which was followed by another excellent outing in 1959–60 to make it four in total.


Hibernian Football Club

Hibernian Football Club is a professional football club based in Edinburgh. Hibernian competes in the Premiership.


Hibs have won a total of four league titles in the past with the first trophy in the 1902–03 season. Hibs also won the league back to back between 1950–51 and 1951–52.

The Scottish Premiership has produced notable Champions in the past although it has been a two-horse race since the beginning of time with Rangers and Celtic having most of the titles.

Other notable teams that have won up to four titles include Aberdeen, Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian Football Club.

Despite the huge dominance of Celtic and Rangers, it still does not rule out the uniqueness of the league in Scotland.
