Santiago Arias injured in Colombia World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela

The Atletico Madrid full-back who is currently on loan at Bayer Leverkusen was critical injured as he was stretched off the pitch during the World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela (h/t Fussball Transfers).

 

The Colombians who eventually ran away with the win had to lose the services of Arias barely ten minutes into the first half.

 

Arias sustained a serious injury on his left ankle which is still awaiting diagnosis. A fracture of the tibia and fibula is suspected.

 

The injury is expected to lead to surgery and he could be out for a long period.

 

The introduction of Santiago Arias at Bayer Leverkusen have left Lars Bender and Mitchell Wieser who no longer have a place in coach Peters Bosz on the bench.

 

Meanwhile, Colombia cruised past Venezuela thanks to a goal from Zapata as well as a brace from Muriel.

 

For Arias, he is expected to sit of Bayer first team for long period, pending the nature of the injury.
