Rosenior set for Hull job

Published

Liam Rosenior is set to be appointed as head coach as Championship side Hull City.

The 38 year old, who was in attendance for Tuesday night’s home defeat by Middlesbrough has agreed a deal to take over at the club. He replaces Shota Arveladze, the Georgian, who was sacked in September.

He had made a bright start to the season, but paid with his job when he was sacked by owner Acun Ilicali after overseeing four successive defeats.

Caretaker Andy Dawson has won three out of his six games in charge since, but that was not enough for him to be offered the post.

Rosenior already knows Hull well, having spent five seasons there during his playing career between 2010 and 2015. In all he made 144 appearances for the Tigers and was part of the team that won promotion to the Premier League in 2013, and then reached the FA Cup Final in 2014 under Steve Bruce.

Famously Hull went two goals up against Arsenal inside ten minutes in that match, before the Gunners responded to win it in extra time.

Rosenior is the son of Leroy, a former player and manager himself, who has the distinction of the shortest managerial reign in history. He was in charge of Torquay United for just ten minutes before a change in ownership which occurred in the meantime led to him being sacked.

Although this will be Rosenior’s first managerial appointment, he has been involved in coaching with Derby County.

He was initially appointed as a coach under Philip Cocu and then stepped-up to become Wayne Rooney’s assistant in January of last year.

When Rooney decided to leave the club following their relegation to League One at the end of last season, he was placed in temporary charge by new owner David Clowes.

He oversaw a massive overhaul of the squad, with 12 new players arriving at Pride Park, but when he won only three out of his first 12 games in charge, he was relieved of his responsibilities and Paul Warne appointed in his stead.

Rosenior’s first game in charge will be away to Millwall on Saturday.

He inherits a club currently 20th in the table, just one point and two places above the relegation zone, and his immediate priority is to begin steering them towards mid-table safety.

Illicali, though, is famously ambitious and wants the club to be challenging for a return to the Premier League as soon as possible. Whether Rosenior can deliver that remains to be seen.
