Since the rebranding, Ishaya Jatau was the first to be recorded on the all time NPFL top scorers chart in 1990 while he was playing for Iwuanyanwu Nationale now Heartland Football club.

Paul Kpoughoul became the first foreign non Nigerian to be listed on the all time scorers chart. The DR Congo footballer was with Jasper United in 1997, scoring 16 goals in the process.

Joetex Frimpong from Ghana also made history for himself at the second foreigner to be crowned highest goalscorer of the season. He scored 16 goals with El-Kanemi Warriors.

Jude Aneke was the first player in history to score 20 goals in a single NPFL season. Aneke achieved this with Kaduna United in 2011.

From then, the tradition started as no single player was able to surpass the goal record held by Aneke. However in 2014, Mfon Udoh scored 23 goals with Enyimba.
