Newcastle United biggest win – Top 5 victories

Published

on

Since Newcastle United was formed in 1892 from the merger of two earlier clubs, Newcastle East End, and Newcastle West End, they have played hundreds of matches in all sorts of competitions.

Inevitably in that time, there have been some handsome victories for the Newcastle faithful to cheer.

But what have been the biggest wins for Newcastle United?

Newcastle United 8 Sheffield Wednesday 0 Premier League 1999

It was a day to remember for Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time top scorer, when Sheffield Wednesday visited St. James Park in September 1999. He scored five goals, three in the first half, including a penalty, and two after the break. Aaron Hughes, Gary Speed and Kieron Dyer also found the net watched by a crowd of just under 37,000.

Morecambe 0 Newcastle United 7 EFL Cup 2020

Newcastle travelled to Morecambe to play this third round EFL Cup tie in September 2020, and it proved to be an enjoyable evening for the travelling fans.

Within half an hour Newcastle were four goals to the good, thanks to a brace Joelinton, Miguel Almirón, and Jacob Murphy.

The cause of the League 2 club was not helped when they lost Toumani Diagouranga to a straight red card, and there was still time for Isaac Hayden to make it five before half-time.

Newcastle could afford to ease off in the second-half, but they added another goal through Jamaal Lascelles, before Samuel Lavelle put through his own net in injury time.

Newcastle United 8 Everton 2 First Division 1959

Newcastle romped into a four goal lead against Everton in the old First Division in November 1959, with George Luke and Gordon Hughes finding the net in the first six minutes, before Len White and George Eastham with a penalty made it four.

White and Ivor Allchurch made it six after the break, before Everton pulled one back through Eddie Thomas.

Then White completed his hat-trick, before Thomas got his second of the afternoon.

Allchurch made it eight for the home side in the 89th minute.

Newcastle United 7 Swindon Town 1 Premier League 1994

Peter Beardsley gave Newcastle the lead from the penalty spot in this Premier League fixture, and then Rob Lee added a second soon afterwards.

Rob Lee got his second of the afternoon, and Beardsley also completed his brace, before there was a flurry of goals. First Steve Watson scored, but Swindon were given brief hope when John Moncur pulled a goal back for them. But that was soon extinguished as Watson also scored for a second time, before Ruel Fox completed the scoring.

Newcastle United 7 Tottenham Hotspur 1 Premier League 1996

That scoreline was to be matched just over two years later.

Three players – Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand, and Rob Lee all scored a brace as Newcastle gave their fans some Christmas cheer in this Christmas fixture in 1996, whilst Philippe Albert also got on the scoresheet.

Those Tottenham fans who stayed until the bitter end did at least have the consolation of seeing Allan Nielsen grab a late consolation for them.
