Man City vs Sevilla match report: The Super Cup goes to Manchester
Manchester City won the first trophy of the season as they were better than Sevilla in the final of the European Super Cup.
The winner was decided only after the penalty shootout and the tragedy. He was the Serbian representative Nemanja Gudelj; he missed the fifth series for the Spanish team, and the trophy went to the European and English champions.
Sevilla was the better rival for more than an hour, but just as the Europa League is its competition, so the matches of the European Super Cup are by no means Sevilla’s. The Andalusians have only one trophy out of seven possible European Supercups.
The match at the “Karaiskakis” stadium in Piraeus ended in a 1:1 draw after 90 minutes, and then, after a better performance in the penalty shootout, the English team won 5:4. The goals were scored by Youssef En-Nesiri in the 26th minute for Sevilla, Cole Palmer in the 63rd minute for Manchester City
Besides the trophy it has never had in its display cases, Manchester City tonight “got” the 21-year-old Cole Palmer.
The offensive midfielder, who replaced the sick Bernardo Silva on the right side, made great use of the opportunity and showed that the Citizens were right when they rejected West Ham’s proposal to use him in exchange for Lucas Paqueta.
Palmer himself insisted on staying, believing that he could fight for more playing time in Pep Guardiola’s team. In the absence of the injured Kevin De Bruyne, who we will hardly see on the field again this year, Palmer could get more confidence and freedom from Guardiola.
Although the most inexperienced of both teams tonight, he did not succumb to the pressure. Moreover, he dared to make attractive moves in certain moments.
Pep Guardiola made history as the first manager to win the European Super Cup with three different clubs, having previously triumphed with Barcelona (2009 and 2011) and Bayern (2013).
Interestingly, Manchester City played in the final of the European Super Cup for the first time in history, unlike Sevilla, for which this was as many as the seventh participation, but they won only one.
They beat Barcelona in 2006, then lost to Milan in 2007, Real in 2014, Barcelona in 2015, Real again in 2016, Bayern in 2020, and now this.
