Usually suspects Club América, Toluca, Cruz Azul and Guadalajara are facing tough competition this time.

For Club América, finishing outside the title contenders position is a call for concern. Guadalajara, León and Pachuca including Tigres UANL are all gearing up for the fierce season ahead.

Would Club América return to the top of the Liga MX standings?

With over 13 titles, they are the most successful and in the domestic league followed by Guadalajara.

But recent seasons have seen the football giants falter in the race for glory.

The last time the title was won was in 2014 which is quite a long time looking at the pedigree of the club at the domestic scene.

With some new recruitments made, Club América are expected to bounce back to winning ways once again.

León is also thought to be eyeing back to back title wins.

Liga MX Coefficient table and league Standings explained

As the new 2020–21 season takes centre stage, the traditional promotion and relegation between Liga MX and Liga de Expansión MX (formerly known as Ascenso MX) were suspended as a result of the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

That being said, the usual coefficient table will be used to establish the payment of fines that will be used for the development of the clubs.

Note that a payment of $MXN240 million will be handed to the last three positioned clubs in the league’s coefficient table which is as follows:

  • 120 million in the last place.
  • 70 million the penultimate.
  • 50 million will be paid by the sixteenth team in the table.

According to the new rule by the league governing body, the team that finishes bottom on the league table will start the following season with a coefficient of zero.

Recall the Clausura 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and as such, the points obtained in the 2020–21 season between matches not held in the Clausura 2020, will now count as double for the 2020–21 coefficient.
