Leeds United Legends: Top 5 best players of all time
Many people are surprised when they see that Leeds was founded in 1919 and celebrated its century of existence a few years ago. One of the first associations with English clubs is tradition and the fact that 90% of them were founded in the 19th century, possibly at the beginning of the 20th.
Leeds is not an exception, but it has had difficult periods in its history due to which the club practically had to change its identity. In this form, that is, under this name and club colours, Leeds United has existed since 1919. However, Leeds’ history is vibrant, and some great players played for this team. Here are some of them:
5. Eddie Gray (1966 – 1983)
Gray spent his entire career at Leeds United and made 577 appearances, scoring 68 goals. He played as a winger, and he is mainly remembered for his goals against Burnley when he flicked and backheeled among several of Burnley’s players and scored a goal. He was voted 3rd Greatest player of Leeds ever and was part of the Greatest Leeds United team.
4. Allan Clarke
The famous “Sniffer” is one of the best strikers that Leeds United ever had. He played for this team between 1969 and 1978 and scored 151 goals. He came to Leeds from Leicester for a record fee at the time of 165.000 pounds, but he was worth every penny of it, and he showed it in the first season when he scored 17 goals in 29 matches.
3. Jack Charlton (1952 – 1973)
Charlton is another player that spent his entire career at Leeds United playing as a defender and a perfect one. He was part of the English national team that won the World Cup in 1966, and he is the older brother to the Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton. He was also part of Leed’s Greatest team ever.
2. Peter Lorimer (1962 – 1978 and 1983 – 1985)
Peter Lorimer or known among Leeds’ fans as “Lash,” made 703 appearances for the team in two periods, from 1962 to 1978 and 1983 to 1985. Mostly he played as an attacking midfielder or right wing, but he was known for his hard shot and scored 238 goals for the team. He was captain of Leeds during one period and also is part of Leed’s Greatest Players ever. Today he still is part of this team.
Billy Bremner (1959 – 1976)
The “King Billy” Bremner is the greatest player of Leeds United of all time. He was not the most skilled or talented player that played for this team, but he was one of the best all-around players in the world, even compared to today’s football stars.
He was recognized for his passion, energy, and fighting spirit, especially when he was captain of this team during the 60s and 70s. He scored 114 goals in 771 appearances for the team in 16 years. He is still remembered and honoured by Leeds fans, and he even got a statue outside Elland Road ground.
