Aston Villa became the first team in history to lift the League Cup and this was achieved at the expense of Rotherham United.

 

In the history of the League Cup, Liverpool and Manchester City hold the record as teams with the most Trophies which stood at eight titles respectively.

 

Teams that are eligible to participate in the English EFL League Cup includes teams from the Premier League, EFL Championship, EFL League One and EFL League Two.

Man City are the joint League Cup winners alongside Liverpool with eight titles.

 

The Citizens claimed their first trophy in 1970, waiting for another six years in 1976 to add a second title.

 

The club however endured another 38-year wait before it could win another title in 2014.

 

Since then, the club has not failed to make an impressive outing in every edition it participated in.

 

The Citizens won the 2018 EFL League Cup, since then, the club has gone on to win four consecutive League title from 2018 to 2021.

 

This achievement was recorded with the emergence of experienced Spanish tactician Pep Guardiola who currently stands as one of the most successful managers when it comes to the Competition in England.

 

Manchester City have also ended up as runners up in 1974.

Manchester City achieved the EFL League Cup title, bringing the number of titles to eight thanks to a hard-fought victory over London based club Tottenham Hotspur in the final.

Liverpool achieved this from 1981 to 1984 while Manchester City enjoyed the trophy sweep from 2018 to 2021 and is expected to continue until the final match of the 2022 EFL League Cup has been decided.

 

2018: Manchester City defeated London based club Arsenal by a 3-0 scoreline to emerge Champions.

 

2019: Manchester City could not break a more resilient Chelsea team who forced the game into extra time as Man City eventually claimed the title after a penalty shootout which ended (4-3).

 

2020: Manchester City claimed its first trophy before the heat of the pandemic by silencing Aston Villa to another title.

 

City won with a 2-1 scoreline at Wembley Stadium.

 

2021: In front of 7,773 spectators, Manchester City pip Tottenham Hotspur to claim an eighth League Cup title and their fourth consecutive win, equalling Nottingham Forest initial record as the only team to achieve it.

 

Liverpool

Liverpool is a professional football club based in Liverpool and competes in the English Premier League.

 

Liverpool is joint League Cup winners alongside Manchester City with eight titles respectively.

 

The Anfield landlords last won the trophy in 2012 after a 2-2 draw against Cardiff City which could only be decided on penalties which Liverpool eventually won.

 

Liverpool has won a total of three titles in the modern era of English football. In 2001, 2003 and 2012.

 

Liverpool has also lost in four finals with the recent in 2016.

 

In 2019, Liverpool had a remarkable achievement in the country, winners of the Premier League, the UEFA Champions League winners and the FIFA Club World Cup winners but could not do the same in the League Cup.

 

2012: It was a draw against Cardiff City in normal regulation time and Liverpool could only manage to win the trophy via the penalty spot.

 

2016 loss: Liverpool lost out via penalty shootout against record Champions Manchester City in the final.

 

Liverpool was the first club in the history of the Competition with four consecutive wins from 1981 to 1984.

 

Aston Villa

Aston Villa is a professional football club that plays in the English Premier League.

 

Aston Villa became the first club in history to win the EFL League Cup in the inaugural edition of 1961.

 

In the modern era of the League Cup, Aston Villa has won three titles in 2005, 2007 and 2015.

The last time Chelsea won the EFL League Cup was in 2015.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur is another successful side in the League Cup with four titles.

 

The Spurs have also lost on different occasions in the 21st century against top sides including Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United.

 

Spurs tasted their first title in 1971 and two years later in 1973.

 

The last time Spurs lifted the trophy was in the 2008 edition where the club defeated Chelsea by a 2-1 scoreline.

Nottingham Forest
