The MVP, also known as the Landon Donovan MVP Award, is an annual award for the best performance of MLS players at the end of the season.
The winners emerge at the end of a voting system by the media, MLS players, and club management.
In honour of US soccer legend Landon Donovan, the MLS MVP Award has been renamed the Landon Donovan MVP Award with effect from 2015.
In 1996 when the MLS introduced the MVP Award, it was referred to as the Honda Award for sponsorship purposes until 2007. German automobile giant Volkswagen took over the sponsorship from 2007 to 2014.
Colombian soccer player Carlos Valderrama who played for Tampa Bay Mutiny, won the MLS MVP in the inaugural season in 1996.
To date, Kansas City Wizards forward Predrag Radosavljević (Preki) is the only player to have won the award twice, in 1997 and 2003.
