1. SL Benfica

 

Dates Joined: 2000

José Mourinho began his managerial career with Portuguese giants Benfica.

 

2. União de Leiria

Dates Joined – 2001–2002

União de Leiria was the second team josé Mourinho coached. He joined the Portuguese club in 2001 after he left Benfica.

 

The Portuguese manager performed well at União de Leiria, which led to his move to another Portuguese league giants FC Porto.

 

3. FC Porto

Dates Joined – 2002–2004

Leaving União de Leiria paved the way for José Mourinho’s recognition on the European continent.

 

FC Porto appointed the club’s new manager following a disappointing performance that saw them lose major trophies to rivals SL Benfica. His reign at the club became part of the club’s golden years.

 

Making huge promises like lifting the league title during his presentation, José went on to win the league to fulfill his promise.

 

He took the club to European success by defeating Scottish side Celtic to lift the UEFA Cup and completed the Portuguese treble by winning the Portuguese Cup.

 

The former União de Leiria manager entered the UEFA Champions League with his new team after claiming the Portuguese treble the preview season.

 

During the 2003–04 UEFA Champions League season, Mourinho guided Porto to a second-place finish despite having Real Madrid in the same group and advanced to the next level.

 

Road to the final, Porto eliminated Manchester United in the Round of 16, Lyon in the quarter-finals, and Deportivo La Coruña in the semifinal to reach the finals.

 

José and his boys trashed French side AS Monaco to lift the Champions League title with Porto in the 2003/2004 season.

The appointment of José by the new Chelsea’s owner Roman Abramovich became a facelift for the club after over £100 spent on players could not yield better results.

5. Inter Milan

Mourinho’s empire at Chelsea ended, after which the blues began a new chapter with the appointment of Guus Hiddink.

 

Mourinho joined Italian Serie A Inter Milan in 2008, winning the Suppercoppa Italiana (Italy Super Cup) and a fourth consecutive Italia Série A title.

 

Although Inter Milan’s top hierarchy eyed the Champions League, josé could not make a dream come true as he fell to Premier League side Manchester United en route to the final.

 

Despite losing to United, Inter Milan returned more robust in the 2009–10 Champions League campaign to lift the title, beating Bayern Munich 2–0 in the final.

6. Real Madrid

Mourinho’s successful outing with FC Porto and Inter Milan was too big to ignore by Real Madrid’s top hierarchy, who sought to bring the Portuguese to Spanish football.

 

His previous success in the European scene did not go unnoticed as Real Madrid made further steps to announce his appointment as the club’s new manager.

 

José joined Real Madrid in 2010. His first challenge was to win the Copa del Rey, currently the club’s lowest domestic trophy dominated by Barcelona and Athletic Club Bilbao.

 

Mourinho successfully won the Copa del Rey with Real Madrid courtesy of an extra-time goal. In 2011–12, the Portuguese manager guided the club to another Spanish La Liga title, which was the club’s record 32nd time in history.
