Is the European Super League coming back? Real Madrid president makes fresh attempts – Telegraph
The European Super League debate is far from over as Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus continue with their legal battle with UEFA over the legality of running the breakaway football league.
The three clubs are in the Super League, intending to open a new window of opportunities only to the biggest football clubs. The new promise is to double more than the revenue generated by clubs in the continent annually compared to what they get in the traditional UEFA competitions.
According to the Telegraph, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez is making fresh attempts to see the return of the Super League project, which failed upon its establishment.
The three breakaway clubs are awaiting the European Court of Justice to give their final verdict over Uefa’s control of European football. And a breakthrough could mean the return of the new league.
But according to Yahoo Sports, Barcelona president Joan Laporta wants a key change in the original idea, which supports a closed system. Instead, he wants an open system for the Super League.
“I think that playing between the big clubs would end up tiring,” he said in an interview for the Sonora project,” says Joan Laporta as cited by Yahoo Sports.
The Barcelona president gave reasons why the open system should be adopted instead of the original closed system that allows only the most prominent clubs to participate.
“You find that a European Championship is won by Greece and it is very nice. And when Leicester [City] won in England it was special. This is football.
“I entered the Super League as Barca’s representative with everything already well advanced. My criteria was, leave a closed league, we have to make an open Super League, where there is a meritocracy.
Although UEFA has brought out a significant change in the way the Champions League works, the idea of the Super League refuses to go away as Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus continue to press for the legality of the project despite a fightback from UEFA.
What’s next for the Super League?
The three clubs will ramp up discussions in the coming weeks regarding Super League qualification, format and revenue-sharing with participating clubs. Also, it would help persuade teams in the ESL pool.
The idea remains active as Juventus president Andrea Agnelli touched on the financial supremacy of the English Premier League over leagues in Europe.
