• New York City FC

New York City FC won their first-ever MLS Cup thanks to an impressive run last season. The City Football Group-owned club had spent a lot on players but couldn’t get the job done.

However, the 2021 season brought a huge relief for the club after years of inching closer to the finals.

Players like Valentín Castellanos, Maxi Moralez and Keaton Parks were at top gear to help the New York-based club claim their first MLS Cup Trophy.

Ahead of the 2022 season, New York City hopes to defend their first-ever MLS Cup trophy.

• Portland Timbers

The Timbers had to rely on the last gasp equaliser in the 2021 MLS Cup final after Valentín Castellanos had put the New York City side in front in the first half.

However, missed penalties prevented the Timbers from lifting the second MLS Cup Trophy after losing in their previous attempt in 2018 to Atlanta United FC.

• Real Salt Lake City

Real Salt Lake City had one of the best outings last season but could not keep up with the impressive record until the final. For the Salt Lake-based club, positives would be drawn from the previous season’s disappointing end.

• Philadelphia Union

Philadelphia Union finished the 2021 MLS season second in the Eastern Conference regular-season and qualified for the playoffs.

The Union progressed to the semi-finals of the MLS Cup playoffs, where they were stopped by eventual winners New York City FC.

• Valentín Castellanos

Argentine forward Taty Castellanos was at his best form last season. Taty won the 2021 MLS Golden Boot award after scoring 19 goals, including New York City FC goal in the MLS Cup final against Portland Timbers.

As one of the most consecutive forward in the league, Taty had an average rating last the season at 7.0. The high pressing forward is expected to continue with his excellent form as the New York City hope to defend their first-ever MLS Cup.

• Carles Gil

Carles Gil plays as an attacking midfielder for New England Revolution. The former European football star moved to the MLS in 2019 and has since established himself as one of the best in the team.

Last season, Gil averaged 6.80 and was part of the New England Revolution team that claimed the MLS Supporters Shield. The 29-year old is expected to continue with his impressive form.

• Javier Hernández

Javier Hernández joined the Los Angeles Galaxy and quickly announced his arrival with a hat-trick against New York Red Bulls.

Hernandez is one of the best players of his generation. He’d played for big European football clubs like Manchester United, Bayer Leverkusen, Real Madrid, West Ham United, etc.

Javier finished the 2021 MLS season as one of the top-rated players in the division.

• Lorenzo Insigne

Italian footballer Lorenzo Insigne was announced by Canadian based MLS franchise Toronto FC as their new signing for the upcoming season.

Insigne signed a pre-contract with Toronto FC and is expected to depart Napoli, where he currently serves as captain of the side in July.
