Chelsea had won five EFL League Cup titles since 1995, when the club first succeeded against Leicester City.

Chelsea won the League Cup in 1964–65, 1997–98, 2004–05, 2006–07 and 2014–15. The London-based club have also lost in four finals, most recently to Liverpool on penalties which could have increased the club’s tally to six.
Early years in the competition
The early years of the English League Cup utilised a different format for finals.
In the 1964–65 final, Chelsea won 3-2 on aggregate to lift their first title. But this was followed by a 33-year for a second title in 1998.
Post-2000s
From 2005 to 2022, Chelsea appeared in six League Cup finals, winning three finals.
