Godwin Aguda played a major role as Rivers United against all odds defeated South African Premier Soccer League outfit Bloemfontein Celtics in the first leg second round of the 2020/2021 CAF Confederations Cup in South Africa.
Aguda opened scoring for the away in 71st minute after forcing the South African side to a scoreless draw in the first half. Fortune Omoniwari further went on to seal the win for the NPFL side in the 83rd minute to redeem Nigeria’s image on the continent after Enyimba had lost on the road.
The Rivers State-based football club are expected to at least play out a draw in the reverse fixture to ensure qualifications for the playoff against teams from the Champions League second round.
The journey so far has been great. Rivers United defeated Futuro Kings in the first round at home after losing the first leg away.
But coach Stanley Eguma was optimistic of his side even as the experienced manager came back home to complete the business on home soil.
