Football clubs that own their stadium – top 10 famous teams

Published

on

Football clubs and Stadiums are inseparable. Thus, there has been construction and reconstruction of stadiums every year to suit the needs of their host clubs.

But how many clubs own their stadium? Due to the cost of building, maintenance, and siting of stadiums, many clubs globally do not have a ground they could call their own, thus forcing them to pay some significant fees to lease one.

Despite these, many clubs have stadiums, although some may not meet the highest standard accepted globally.

Do football clubs own their stadiums?

Every football club is entitled to have its Stadium. However, a lot of factors come into play. Firstly, siting the ground could be complicated, and secondly, they needed funds to build a mega project like a stadium may not be available.

This, as a result, makes it difficult for some clubs to have their own. Today, some of the most famous clubs lease their home ground or have a share of it, or play on Stadiums owned by the club owners.

From Bayern Munich, Manchester United, and Barcelona to Real Madrid, Interesting Football brings you some famous football clubs that own their stadiums globally.

1. FC Bayern Munich (Allianz Arena)

Bayern Munich is one of the most famous football clubs globally. The Bavarians, as they are often called, are the majority owners of the Allianz Arena (Arena Munich), after purchasing  TSV 1860 Munich’s 50 percent share in holding company Allianz Arena Munich Stadium GmbH.

The stadium has a history tied to Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich.

The 75,000-capacity stadium has hosted a series of football matches and other events. It is currently the home ground for Bayern Munich for all competitions the club participates in. The German Men’s Football team sometimes adopts it.

2. Real Madrid (Santiago Bernabéu)

Real Madrid Football club owns the famous Santiago Bernabéu stadium, which has existed since 1947. The 81,044 capacity arena has played host to numerous football competitions, concerts and other activities.

Real Madrid plays their home games in the Spanish La Liga, UEFA Champions League, and other competitions at the stadium. It was recently approved for a massive renovation, that is, to make it a digital Stadium for the future.

3. FC Barcelona (Spotify Camp Nou)

FC Barcelona owns the famous Camp Nou Stadium, the largest stadium in Europe owned by a football club.

Camp Nou has a sitting capacity of 99,354 and has served as the home ground for the Catalan club since 1957. It has also hosted other football-related matches involving Catalonia national football team and UEFA football finals.

4. Tottenham Hotspur FC (Tottenham Hotspur stadium)

Tottenham Hotspur is one of the top teams in the Premier League. The North London club recently completed the New Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at an estimated cost of £1 billion. It is a multi-purpose stadium and features the world’s first dividing, retractable football pitch.

5. Manchester United (Old Trafford)

Manchester United FC is the sole owner of the Old Trafford Stadium. The 74,310 capacity arena is the largest football stadium in the English Premier League. It was opened in 1910 and is one of the oldest football stadiums in the English Premier League.

6. Goodison Park

Goodison Park is the sole property of Everton FC. The all-seated Stadium has a capacity of 39,414 and has served as the home ground for the club.

7. Borussia-Park

Borussia Park is one of the iconic football stadiums in German football. Five-time German champions Borussia Monchengladbach owns it.

Borussia-Park has a seating capacity of 54,057 and is famously known for its wild atmosphere, especially on matchdays involving the team (Borussia Monchengladbach).

8. São Paulo FC (Estádio do Morumbi)

Brazilian football giants São Paulo FC is one of the teams with their Stadium. The Estádio Cícero Pompeu de Toledo has been the home ground for the club since 1960.

9. Juventus FC (Juventus Stadium)

The New Juventus Stadium (Allianz Stadium for sponsorship reasons) was launched in 2011 as football specific Stadium for the future. It is an all-seater with a seating capacity of over forty-one thousand people.

10. Metropolitano Stadium (Atletico Madrid)

After going through a series of ownership, Atletico Madrid finally got hold of the Wanda Metropolitano as its sole property in 2017 following the demolishing of its former ground, the Vincente Calderon.

It has a sitting capacity of 68,456 people and reportedly had a construction cost of around €240 million.
