A suggested idea of possible expansion was made by the FIFA president in 2016.


The new tournament will consist of 32 teams beginning in 2019.


The usual December tournament was to be rescheduled to June in a bid to create a balanced tournament and also to more attractive investors, more broadcasters and sponsors.

However, In late 2017, there were proposals to expand the competition to 24 teams and have it be played every four years beginning from 2021.


The plans for the 2021 new tournament was eventually cancelled.
