Corinthians finished the 2021 Brazilian league season, sitting fifth on the final league standings, seeing Atlético Mineiro lift the league title after a thirty-year wait.
The club has already begun the 2022 Campeonato Paulista Série A1 on a bright note with interim coach Fernando Lázaro. But a significant change is expected to be made before the commencement of the league in March.
According to ESPN Brasil, Paulo Fonseca is the leading candidate to land the top job at the club after Sylvinho’s dismissal last season. As per ESPN Brasil’s article, the club’s board sees the Portuguese as the best option.
Paulo Fonseca left AS Roma in 2021 and was succeeded by compatriot José Mourinho. The 48-year old manager has managed prominent European football clubs like FC Porto, Braga and Shakhtar Donetsk.
In terms of trophies, Paulo Fonseca won the Ukrainian Premier League four times, the Ukrainian Cup three times, and was awarded the Ukrainian Premier League Best Coach: 2016–17 at Shakhtar Donetsk.
Corinthians had yet another miserable outing in the Brazilian top flight last season, and Paulo Fonseca could usher in a new era.
