European Golden Shoe race – 2022 / 2023 standings

With goals in the Premier League, flicking through the Champions League, and a roaring challenge in La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1, the European Golden Shoe race may not loosen up in the 2022-2023 season.

Who is leading the European Golden Shoe?

First, a look at how things flare up in the various European leagues.

The Premier League has seen a new leader in Erling Haaland. The Norwegian is a clear contender for the Premier League Golden Boot. His goal ratio per game has been put at 0.95, according to Sofascore.

A surprise leader, Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen leads the Serie A top scorers chart, but with a slim margin. He is one of the top contenders for the annual Capocannoniere award.

Lewandowski swapping the Bundesliga for La Liga appears to have paid off, even as he leads the chart. Bundesliga is a no man’s land, whereas Ligue 1 is witnessing a tight competition between superstars, rookies, and wonder kids.

Interesting football brings you the top scorers in Europe this season. We selected players from the top five leagues, and of course, you’ll agree this is where the competition lies.

European Golden Shoe standings 2022-2023

1. Erling Haaland – 18 Goals (36 points)

Erling Haaland

Club: Manchester City

League: Premier League

The ultimate goal for Manchester City in the summer transfer window, Erling Haaland continues to show his consistency and why he should be ranked among the best number nine in the world.

The Norwegian leads the Premier League scorers chart by a concise number. That said, he has continued to add the number one every matchday.

2. Robert Lewandowski – 12 Goals (24 points)

Club: FC Barcelona

League: Spanish La Liga

The decision by Robert Lewandowski to seek a new challenge with Barcelona in the Spanish La Liga appears to have paid off. The Polish forward is in one pole position and now seems to be the new goal hero, saviour, and leader at the Catalan club.

Lewandowski has shown to be one of the most prolific footballers in the world.

3. Christopher Nkunku – 12 Goals (24 points)

Christopher Nkunku

Club: RB Leipzig

League: Bundesliga

A great revelation in the Bundesliga, Christopher Nkunku has shown to be one of the most consistent forwards in the German Bundesliga. Following the failure to prove himself at PSG, Nkunku now dominates the show in Germany with his attacking prowess and consistency in front of the goal.

In the last couple of seasons, he has managed to hit double figures.

4. Harry Kane – 12 Goals (24 points)

Club: Tottenham Hotspur FC

League: Premier League

Harry Kane is one of the household names in the English Premier League and has been at this level for a while. The Tottenham Hotspur forward has won three EPL Golden boots.

This season, he has continued to bang in the goals for the Spurs under the guidance of Antonio Conte.

5. Kylian Mbappé – 12 Goals (24 points)

Club: Paris Saint-Germain

League: French Ligue 1

Kylian Mbappé is no surprise name on the European Golden Shoe race. The young Frenchman, along with Neymar and Lionel Messi, has been the goal provider for PSG.

Even though off-field issues have popped up, Mbappé seems undeterred and looks set to claim his first award at the highest level of football on the continent.

6. Neymar – 11 Goals (22 points)

Club: Paris Saint-Germain

League: French Ligue 1

Paris Saint-Germain’s chances in Europe heavily rely on the trio of Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, and Lionel Messi. The Brazilian, on his part, has not failed to do so, even with the off-field issues surrounding the team.

Neymar has been one of the most outstanding players at the club this season despite facing criticism for his failure to kick it at the highest level amid the world record move to the French capital club.

7. Niclas Fullkrug – 10 Goals (20 points)

Club: SV Werder Bremen

League: Bundesliga

The German Bundesliga has never fallen short of new stars. This is Niclas Fullkrug, the main player at the newly promoted SV Werder Bremen.

Last season in Bundesliga 2, he scored 19 goals to finish third on the top scorers’ chart. He was also the star player at Werder Bremen and one reason the club earned a promotion to the top flight after a season’s absence.

8. Ivan Toney – 10 Goals (20 points)

Club: Brentford FC

League: Premier League

A great revelation powering Brentford FC in the Premier League, Ivan Toney has become a household name since day one of the club’s promotion to the Premier League after a 74-year wait.

Last season, his goals helped the club stay afloat. This season, they’re causing upsets against the big sides in the Premier League.

9. Aleksandar Mitrovic – 9 Goals (18 points)

Club: Fulham

League: Premier League

In the last couple of seasons, Fulham has made it back to the top flight, Aleksandar Mitrovic has been their star player, and this season is no exception.

The Serbian has been consistent with his game. Interestingly, most of his goals have been from open play. He has scored against some of the Premier League big six.

10. Marcus Thuram – 9 Goals (18 points)

Club: Borussia Monchengladbach

League: Bundesliga

Marcus Thuram is one of the loyal servants of Borussia Monchengladbach. The Swiss footballer has continued with his fine form, which has attracted interest from top teams across the continent.

Thuram may not be your regular scorer, but he sure knows how to find the back of the net when he sees it

11. Jonathan David – 9 Goals (18 points)

Club: Lille

League: French Ligue 1

Remembered for his contributions as Lille edged Paris Saint-Germain to the French Ligue 1 title in 2020–21, Jonathan David has continued to be in the spotlight. The Canadian remains a player to watch in Europe.

Versatile, robust, and pacey, David has been put on the watchlist by the top players on the European continent.

12. Terem Moffi – 9 Goals (18 points)

Club: FC Lorient

League: French Ligue 1

Terem Moffi’s first attempt at breaking into the scene in France was in the 2021 season, and it appears his consistency is paying off. He is a talent that should not be ignored.

The Nigerian forward laces his boots for Lorient, who hopes to join the French contingents making waves in European football.

13. Jamal Musiala – 9 Goals (18 points)

Club: FC Bayern Munich

League: Bundesliga

Arguably one of the best young talents in Europe this season, Jamal Musiala has moved from the level of a youth player to a regular first-team player under Julian Nagelsmann.

Julian Nagelsmann had allowed Musiala to play with freedom, which resulted in the momentum in front of the goal.

14. Alexandre Lacazette – 9 Goals (18 points)

Club: Olympique Lyon

League: French Ligue 1

He is gradually finding his feet following his departure from Arsenal. The French forward returned to his fortress and appeared to be gaining his best form.

Alexandre Lacazette could make it to the spotlight if he continues with his consistency with Olympique Lyonnais.

I'm a sports enthusiast, love writing about football. I have been writing about top teams in Europe, the Premier League and La Liga.
