English Premier League (EPL) teams and their nicknames 2021/2022

English Premier League teams are some of the most popular clubs globally, having some of the most acceptable nicknames tied to their history.

 

From Manchester United to Crystal Palace, the EPL has an array of clubs that would tickle your fancy.

 

Which Premier League team has the most acceptable nickname? Read on to know all English Premier League teams and their aliases.

 

 

We researched every club in the division to analyse and explain every bit of what you should know about these clubs.

 

The English Premier League, often referred to as the EPL, is the top tier professional football league in England, Contested by 20 clubs.

 

It doubles as the best league and most valuable football league globally, having a prize worth over 150 million pounds shared amongst clubs at the end of every season.

 

Premier League teams nickname 2021/2022 season

 

1. Arsenal

Nickname: The Gunners, The Arsenal

Arsenal is one of the best football clubs in England, often caught up in the middle of bragging rights with fellow Premier League side Chelsea.

 

The Gunners are the only club to finish a league season unbeaten in the modern era of football EPL.

 

The Gunners set an English record for the longest top-flight unbeaten league run at 49 games between 2003 and 2004, earning the nickname “The Invincibles”.

 

The “Gooners”, often referred to as the club’s fan base, was derived from the club’s nickname.

 

To date, Arsenal home matches sell out. While being famous on the home front, Arsenal also draws large supporters and fan base worldwide, most especially in North America and Africa.

 

2. Aston Villa

Nickname: The Villans, The Lions, The Claret & Blue Army

 

Even though The Villans are not usually ranked among the Big Five of English football, they’re one of the five English clubs to have won the European Cup in 1981–82, now known as the Champions League.

 

Aston Villa is one of the most popular clubs in the Midlands and the United Kingdom. Also, over the years, the club has successfully attracted many supporters worldwide.

 

Making the Villa Park, the club’s home ground, more exciting and attractive to visit, The song “The Bells Are Ringing” is to be played before games, a song that was a supporter based initiative.

 

3. Brentford

Nickname: The Bees

“The Bees” are among the oldest professional football club in England, founded in 1889. The club gained promotion to the EPL 2021/2022 season, a long absence.

 

The London based club have played more season in the lower divisions of English football.

 

How did Brentford get their nickname “The Bees”? It was more of an intentionally move that came to the fore when students of Borough Road College in the 1890s created it.

 

It was later misheard by media agencies which later referred to the team as “The Bees’ till today.

 

4. Brighton & Hove Albion

Nickname: The Seagulls, Albion

The Seagulls” are one of the early professional football clubs in England who played professionally outside the system before the election into the Football League in 1920.

 

The club’s most successful years were in the lower leagues and Cup FA Cup runners-up in 1983.

 

The club’s nickname was derived from the city of Brighton and Hove, where they’re located. Also, the Seagulls represent the actual seagull superimposed on the club’s logo.

 

Brighton and Hove Albion returned to the Premier League following their successful outing in the 2016–17 season EFL Championship where they finished second.

 

Since then, they’ve consistently kept their place in the top flight and have avoided being relegated to the second division.

 

5. Burnley

Nickname: The Clarets

The Clarets were successful in the early years of English football, winning two top-flight titles in 1920–21 and 1959–60. The club has also won the FA Cup once, in 1913–14, and have won the FA Charity Shield twice.

 

During the 1960–61 European Cup, Burnley reached the quarter-finals. Burnley derived their nickname “the Clarets” from the club’s home shirts colours which are predominantly Clarets.

 

6. Chelsea

Nickname: The Blues, The Pensioners

Chelsea Football Club is one of the most successful teams in England, having won major trophies like the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League and Europa League.

 

The club was founded in 1905. Nicknamed “The Blues” or the “The Pensioners”, Chelsea have more supporter base outside England, most of which could be found in North America, Africa and Asia.

 

As per statistics, Chelsea has the sixth-highest average all-time attendance in English football. The club’s supporters and fan base have several nicknames attached to them.

 

Fans are known to chant songs “Carefree regularly”, “Lord of the Dance”, “Ten Men Went to Mow”, “We All Follow the Chelsea”, “Land of Hope and Glory”).

 

Other chants include “Blue is the colour, football is the game We’re all together, and winning is our aim. So cheer us on through the sun and rain ’cause Chelsea, Chelsea is our name”.

 

7. Crystal Palace

Nickname: The Eagles, The Glaziers

Crystal Palace is one of the most consistent teams in the Premier League and is often one of the oldest professional football clubs globally.

 

The club’s nickname “The Eagles” was inspired by Portuguese club Benfica. They’re also referred to as the “The Glaziers”.

 

8. Everton

Nickname: The Blues, The Toffees, The People’s Club, The School of Science

As a founding member of the Football League, Everton is one of the most consistent teams in the English top-flight, having played a record 118 seasons.

 

Everton has been Champions of England nine times. The Merseyside based club have also won five FA Cups, one European Cup Winners’ Cup, etc.

 

The Toffees” or “The Toffeemen is the most widely known nickname for Everton football club worldwide. The club’s fans base and supporters are often referred to as Evertonians.

 

They contest a fierce rivalry with Liverpool FC, known as the Merseyside Derby, one of the biggest football rivalries in English football to date.

 

9. Leeds United

Nickname: The Whites, The Peacocks

Leeds United, based in Yorkshire, is one of the most successful teams in the country. The club’s most successful years were the 1960s to the 1780s.

 

Leeds United have won major trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and were Runners-up in the 1974–75 European Cup.

 

Leeds United nicknames are “The Whites” and the “The Peacocks”. The clubs primary colour is an all-white and yellow stripe on the sides.

 

10. Leicester City

Nickname: The Foxes, The City

Founded in 1884, the Foxes are one of the oldest football clubs in the English Premier League. In the 2015–16 football season, Leicester City won the Premier League title in what would be later known as the greatest sporting shock ever.

 

Leicester City was likened to be Arsenal, who won the English Premier League title in 2003–04 without a single defeat and dubbed the Invincible.

 

The English Media is dubbed “The Unbelievables”.

 

Leicester City derived their nickname from the Leicestershire tradition, known for hunting Foxes. Since the Premier League success, Leicester City has become one of the attractive teams.

 

11. Liverpool FC

Nickname: The Reds

Nicknamed The Reds, Liverpool FC is one of the most widely supported football clubs globally and has consistently attracted huge crowds to its home ground, Anfield.

 

The club became a household name in English football 1970s and 1980s when it won eleven League titles and four European Cups.

 

Liverpool’s success on the European continent makes them the most successful team in the competition from England.

 

Liverpool fans are famously known for chanting “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.

 

12. Manchester City

Nickname: City, Cityzens, The Citizens, The Sky Blues

Manchester City is one of the most supported football clubs globally, especially since the takeover by City Football Group.

 

Led by Pep Guardiola, who quickly revamped the team’s philosophy and style of play, the Cityzens won back to back Premier League titles and four consecutive EFL Cups.

 

Manchester City became the first team to win all major English trophies in a single season, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup, and the FA Community Shield in the 2018–19 season.

 

Manchester City’s nicknames are City, Cityzens, The Citizens, The Sky Blues.

 

13. Manchester United

Nickname: The Red Devils

Manchester United is England’s biggest and two of the most successful teams in England and Liverpool FC. The club was founded in 1878 and is one of the oldest in the country.

 

Manchester United, nicknamed “the Red Devils”, have won major trophies in England and Europe.

14. Newcastle United

Nickname: The Magpies

Newcastle United nickname is known as The Magpies. They’re one of England’s most successful teams, having won four league titles and four FA Cups.

 

15. Norwich City

Nickname: The Canaries, The Yellows

Norwich City, nicknamed “The Canaries or “The Yellows”, was founded in 1902 and was originally nicknamed the Citizens. The club is based in Norwich, Norfolk.

 

16. Southampton

Nickname: The Saints

Southampton, nicknamed “The Saints”, was founded in 1885 and played its home games at the St Mary’s Stadium.

Southampton is one of the clubs that have consistently competed in the top flight and have avoided relegation. Although, in the past few seasons, the club has suffered some of the heaviest defeats of the English Premier League against the likes of Manchester United and Leicester City.

 

Southampton is still regarded as one of few teams that could pose a big threat against the big sides in the division.

 

17. Tottenham Hotspur

Nickname: The Lilywhites

Tottenham Hotspur, nicknamed “The Lilywhites”, was founded in 1882 and is one of the oldest football clubs in England.

Although the club is nicknamed the Lilywhites, most fans and supporters prefer Spurs. Some fans are also chanting songs like “Come On You Spurs (COYS”.

 

Tottenham Hotspur is one of the most vibrant teams in the English Premier League to date. It was the first team to achieve major honours in the 20th century.

 

The Spurs currently plays their home games at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, which was formally opened in 2021 following the demolition of the White Hart Lane.

 

18. Watford

Nickname: The Hornets, The Golden Boys, Yellow Army, The ‘Orns

Watford FC is a professional football club founded in 1881. The club has many nicknames, including The Hornets, The Golden Boys, Yellow Army, and The ‘Orns.

The Hornets also have a good fan base within and outside England.

 

19. West Ham United

Nickname: The Irons, The Hammers, The Cockney Boys, The Academy of Football

West Ham United is one of few Premier League teams with more than three nicknames.

Its supporters are known as The Hammers, derived from the club’s origins as Thames Ironworks.

 

Other West Ham United nicknames are The Irons, The Cockney Boys, The Academy of Football, or just The Academy.

 

20. Wolverhampton Wanderers

Nickname: Wolves, The Wanderers

Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, nicknamed “Wolves”, was founded in 1877.

 

The Premier League football clubs are the few teams to include a nickname during and after their establishment.
