Emeka Obasi: How the Nigerian agent elevated Jadon Sancho

Emeka Obasi stepped into the scene as Jadon Sancho was a significant target in the transfer market by numerous clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Barcelona.

The Nigerian who manages the affairs of the young Englishman footballer demanded over 120 million pounds from Manchester United and other suitors, even though Sancho was eventually sold to Manchester United at 85 million euros.

Obasi, the CEO of the Elite sports management group, is behind the vast sum Borussia Dortmund had put forward as a potential fee for interested parties.

According to Owngoalnigeria, Borussia Dortmund relied on Obasi to help finalise discussions with clubs for Sancho, after he was also said to be behind Odion Ighalo’s surprise Manchester United move.

The sports management CEO is also said to be at the helm of management of several Nigerian professional footballers outside the shaws of the country, including the likes of Josh Maja, Joe Aribo and Chuba Apkom.

The player’s forms significantly dropped at Dortmund, which could be unrelated to the exit from the club.

Sancho struggled to make the mark at some point in the season, even at Dortmund, even though he’d already enjoyed his stay in Germany.

But the English forward was expected to make a move if Dortmund had decided to lower their asking price for the player.

Obasi, who manages the Elite Project Group, was expected to decide the high asking price for the player. In the end, Sancho was sold to Manchester United for 85 million euros even as the Manchester-based club made him a priority.

Borussia Dortmund faced an impending exit of Jadon Sancho probably before the end of the summer transfer window and not in January.

As per football, London, Manchester United were rumoured to be considering splashing 109 million pounds on the young Englishman with Ole Gunnar Solskjær plans to circle him.

The Norwegian manager wanted to sign Jadon Sancho to improve the midfield at Manchester United. This was a good idea relating to other significant signings like Bruno Fernandes, Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani.

Elsewhere in London, Chelsea’s cash spray in the transfer market in the summer hasn’t yielded much yet, which has pushed the club’s top hierarchy to look for better options like Jadon Sancho, who promises to improve the team’s midfield strength.

For Emeka Obasi, this is the point where ingenuity comes in. The Nigerian sports manager continued negotiating for Sancho since he wanted the 20-year old to make a big-money move.

But if he stayed in Borussia Dortmund until 2023, he would probably leave for free, a move which Manchester United boss Ed Woodward continued to eye.

To avoid Jadon Sancho leaving Borussia Dortmund on free probably in 2023, Emeka Obasi had to negotiate with clubs.

Liverpool are were also said to be interested in securing the services of Sancho as a measure to improve their midfield further.

But in Germany, Dortmund was still willing to retain Sancho for another three to four years if possible.
