Could Man City Face Relegation from the Premier League?

In the world of football, few controversies have stirred as much debate and speculation as the ongoing saga surrounding Manchester City’s alleged financial misconduct.

With 115 charges leveled against the reigning European and English champions by the Premier League, fans and pundits alike are awaiting the outcome of what could be the biggest trial in sports history.

The charges against Manchester City span a range of issues, including failure to report financial information accurately, undisclosed player salaries, and lack of cooperation with the investigation.

Premier League rules allow for a range of sanctions, from a slap on the wrist all the way through to expulsion from the league — but what is the real likelihood of relegation for one of England’s most prominent clubs? And what would it mean for English football?

Man City’s journey from a mid-table Premier League side to a dominant force in English and European football has been remarkable.

Since the takeover by Sheikh Mansour and the ADUG Consortium in 2008, City’s rise to the top of the table has been fueled by significant investment, leading to unrivalled success on the pitch.

Last season they secured their first ever Champions League trophy after beating Inter Milan in the final, completing the treble after eclipsing their rivals in the Premier League and FA Cup.

Over the last decade they have sat at the pinnacle of English football, with a number of the world’s best within their ranks. Striker Erling Haaland is currently the most valuable football player in the world, valued at €180 million.

If (and it’s a big if), they were to face relegation to the Championship, the ranks would quickly fall apart. It’s unlikely you’d find the best player in the world making his mark in the EFL.

But then again, you never know… Pep Guardiola went as far as to say he wouldn’t resign if the Citizens found themselves relegated, saying that he “will not consider [his] future if it depends on being here in the Premier League or being in League One. There is more chance to stay if [the team] are in League One than if [they] were in the Champions League.”

While relegation would be huge news in football, it might not be as catastrophic as you would think. For a smaller club with less financial backing — for example, Everton, who have just been handed a 10 point deduction for their own FFP breach — relegation could be make or break.

However, City’s pockets are deep enough to weather the storm. They would almost certainly bounce back from relegation on their first try, potentially missing only one or two seasons of Champions League football.

If anything, relegation could provide a curve-ball in a City story that’s getting predictable. As they go for their fourth Premier League title in a row, it’s tempting to speculate about whether this narrative could revitalize the side.

It’s been a long time since anyone considered Man City the underdogs. Relegation would also give Man City the chance to add an EFL Championship title to the silverware cabinet.

Ultimately, the fate of City’s trophy cabinet hinges on the outcome of the investigation and the legal proceedings that will follow, but these are not likely to conclude until 2025. This means safety for City for another season or two.

So, the real question now is – if not Man City, then who? Fans are keen to feel like they have a good idea of who will emerge victorious, and who will face relegation.

Backing their predictions with BetMGM free bets is one way in which they can declare their viewpoint on who will be sticking around.

In the Premier League right now, the bottom of the table looks as tightly contested as the top. While Liverpool fight to hold on to their place at the top, Everton, Burnley and Sheffield United round up the bottom of the table in the relegation zone.

Luckily for them, a lot could change between now and the end of the season. Last season, Arsenal spent 248 days at the top of the table, even leading by 8 points heading into February. We all know how that ended.

Regardless of what the table looks like at the end of the season, it’s safe to say that, in Man City’s case, the road to relegation will be a long one.
