The Ballon d’Or is one of the most important individual awards in world football that usually sees tough competition in the race to win. It has been a dream of every player to have the award.

Since it was first awarded in 1956, players from different clubs have emerged as winners.

In the past decades, the award has been dominated by players that played most of their career in the Spanish La Liga (Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi), who have won it twelve times amongst themselves.

As the two players dominate the list, we’ve brought you the list of clubs with the most Ballon d’Or winners.

Inter Milan and Dinamo Kyiv (2 Awards)

Ukrainian giants FC Dinamo Kyiv have produced two Ballon d’Or winners. Oleg Blokhin and Igor Belanov are two players to be crowned the award for an Eastern European club.

The other team with awards is Italian Serie A side Inter Milan who’s had two winners (Lothar Matthäus and Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima).

Manchester United (4 Awards)

Cristiano Ronaldo

Premier League giants Man United is one of the teams with the most Ballon d’Or winners. The old Trafford landlords have produced four winners in the past.

Scottish footballer Denis Law was the first Man United player to be awarded the Ballon d’Or in 1964. He was followed by Bobby Charlton two years after George Best (1966) became the third United player to win it in 1968.

At the beginning of the 21st, Cristiano Ronaldo won the award after a five-star performance in 2008 to become Manchester United’s fourth player to win the Ballon d’Or. The Portuguese forward helped the club to lift the Champions League  and the Premier League title.

Bayern Munich (5 Awards)

German Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich is next on the list with six awards. Three Bavarians collectively won it five times.

Gerd Müller was the first Bayern Munich player to win the Ballon d’Or award in 1970. Following his success, Franz Beckenbauer won the award twice (1972 and 1976) before Karl-Heinz Rummenigge went on to win it consecutively between 1980 and 1981.

AC Milan (8 Awards)

Italian football giants AC Milan have produced eight award winners in the overall rankings. The club’s success in the European Cup and Champions League reflects on the performance of its players at the awards.

Gianni Rivera was the first Milan player to win the Ballon d’Or in 1969. However, the club took eight years to produce a second winner in Ruud Gullit in 1987.

AC Milan was outstanding in European football as Marco van Basten won the award consecutively while having his teammates finish in the runner-up position on both occasions. He won three awards in total.

George Weah emerged winner in 1995 to become the first African player to win the Ballon d’Or and AC Milan’s third player to win it. Subsequently, Andriy Shevchenko and Kaka also won the award to bring the overall numbers to eight.

Juventus (8 Awards)

Italian giants Juventus are tied with AC Milan on eight awards respectively.

Omar Sívori became the first Italian and Juventus player to win the Ballon d’Or in 1961. However, it took the club twenty-one years to produce a winner (Paolo Rossi 1982).

Michel Platini won three Ballon d’Or at Juventus. Subsequently, Roberto Baggio, Zinedine Zidane, and Pavel Nedvěd also won the award.

Barcelona (12 Awards)

Barcelona, alongside Real Madrid, are the two clubs with the most Ballon d’Or winners, tied at twelve awards respectively. Lionel Messi, who has seven and is the player with the most awards, made Barcelona the leader in all-time rankings before Karim Benzema’s success in the 2022 edition took the tally equal.

Although Lionel Messi, who spent over twenty years at Barcelona, has the most awards, he was only the fifth player to win it as Luis Suárez Miramontes was the first Barcelona player to win the Ballon d’Or in 1960.

Dutch footballer Johan Cruyff won two consecutive awards. Other Barcelona players with the award are Hristo Stoichkov, Rivaldo, and Ronaldinho.

Others include Raymond Kopa, Luís Figo, Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima, Fabio Cannavaro, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modrić, and Karim Benzema.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the Real Madrid player with the most Ballon d’Or awards. The Portuguese forward won five awards, including two consecutive awards twice.

Amid Cristiano Ronaldo’s dominance, Luka Modrić and Karim Benzema are the latest to be crowned the award.
