CAF Confederations Cup  most successful teams

CS Sfaxien

When it comes to CAF Confederations Cup, CS Sfaxien from Tunisia is the most successful team with three titles. The North Africans won their first title in 2007 and successfully defended it the following season in 2008.

In the process, they became the first time to defend the title they won since the establishment of the Confederations Cup.

The club’s last sight of the trophy was in 2013. CS Sfaxien has also lost once in the final.

Étoile du Sahel

Étoile du Sahel is the second joint most successful team alongside Congolese side TP Mazembe with two titles each. The club added the number of wins from Tunisian teams from CS Sfaxien’s initial three wins to five wins.

The club’s first triumph was in 2006. The Sahel lost in the 2008 final two years after the club’s first successful outing.

TP Mazembe

TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo is the second most successful team alongside Étoile du Sahel, with two titles each. Mazembe won its first title in 2016 and successfully defended it the following year in 2017.

How teams qualify for the CAF Confederations Cup

Teams across the 55 member nations are eligible to field teams, although it is dependent on the country’s coefficient according to the CAF five year ranking system.

The third-placed team and domestic cup winners in the top twelve leagues are allowed to include two teams in the Competition.

Preliminary round

First Round

Teams that advance from the preliminary round alongside those who receive byes will square up against each other for a place in the playoffs.

Playoffs Round

Losing teams from the CAF Champions League First round will face teams who advanced to the playoffs round for a place in the Group stages.

About CAF Confederations Cup

The CAF Confederations Cup is a separate tournament organised by the Confederation of African football as the second tier football competition behind the CAF Champions League. It was created for more excellent stability and to increase competition on the African continent using producing teams capable of challenging winners of the CAF Champions League.

Compared with the CAF Champions League, teams from the Northern part of Africa have also dominated the Competition.

Northern teams have won more titles than any other part of the continent, followed by central African representatives TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

CS Sfaxien from Tunisia is the only club to have won up to three titles, followed by Étoile du Sahel and TP Mazembe with two titles each.

CAF Confederations Cup is the second tier football competition organised by the Confederation of African Football.

Winners of the CAF Confederations Cup and the CAF Champions League winners play the CAF Super Cup the following year.
