The German Bundesliga is the top tier of professional football in Germany contested by over 18 teams from various states across the German federal republic.

 

The notable household name whenever the Bundesliga is mentioned is Bayern Munich. Although Borussia Dortmund, VfB Stuttgart, SV Werder Bremen, Hamburger SV, Borussia Monchengladbach were once top challengers.

 

The German league was established in 1903 but was replaced by the Bundesliga in the year 1964 according to Wikipedia. It was suspended from 1915 to 1919 due to World War I and again from 1945 to 1947 due to World War II.

The first goal of the newly established league was scored by Friedhelm Konietzka for Borussia Dortmund in their game against Werder Bremen.

Before Bayern Munich even became German title challengers, City rivals 1860 München were even better than the Bavarians at that time. However, the will to improve was behind Bayern Munich upsurge to their current status.

1. Bayern Munich – 30 Titles

 

Bayern Munich remains the most successful club in the history of the German football league with over 30 Bundesliga titles under their belt. The capital club moved to write their name with dark ink in Germany football league history book, winning the title eight straight seasons.

Bayern Munich has had notable world footballers like Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Oliver Khan etc. These players alongside players in the present generation including Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Müller, Javi Martinez helped the club achieve these titles.

2. Borussia Mönchengladbach – 5 Titles

 

Borussia Mönchengladbach is tied on five titles each with Borussia Dortmund. Gladbach has had their glory days back at the beginning of the Bundesliga as a top-flight competition.

3. Borussia Dortmund – 5 Titles

 

Dortmund has over five Bundesliga titles to their name. The Black Yellow or simply the German Yellow Wall are always seen as title contenders although Bayern Munich had always found a way back to winning the title.

4. Hamburger SV – 3 Titles

Hamburger SV holds the record as the only Bundesliga club that had never been relegated from the top tier since it’s formation. The club from the city of Hamburg eventually got relegated during the 2017–18 season.

5. VfB Stuttgart – 3 Titles

6. SV Werder Bremen – 3 Titles

 

SV Werder Bremen was the second team in Germany to lift the Bundesliga title after FC Koln had lifted the first season since the league replaced the old German national league.

1964–65, 1987–88, 1992–93.


7. 1.FC Koln – 2 Titles

 

Koln became the first team to lift the German Bundesliga title in 1964.

 

1963–64, 1977–78.


8. 1. FC Kaiserslautern – 2 Titles

 

1990–91, 1997–98.


9. TSV 1860 Munich – 1 Title
