Brighton wants Lille midfielder Carlos Baleba to replace Caicedo
Brighton are thinking about making a new offer for Lille midfielder Carlos Baleba after identifying the Cameroonian as their main target to replace Moisés Caicedo.
Lille, who acquired Baleba from École de Football des Brasseries du Cameroun in January 2022, turned down an initial offer of £14.5 million plus £2.5 million in bonuses earlier this week. The 19-year-old’s valuation to the French club is thought to be closer to £30m following some standout performances in Ligue 1.
Since his debut in August of last year, Baleba has made 22 appearances for the Ligue 1 team and has contributed two assists. The Cameroonian also played 61 minutes in their season-opening 1-1 draw against Nice.
According to renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Brighton and the midfielder, whose deal with Lille expires in the summer of 2026, have begun negotiations. The deal, according to the Italian journalist, was “not easy,” but Brighton recognizes Baelba’s talent and views him as an important part of their present and future.
The Seagulls got off to a winning start without Caicedo, defeating Luton Town 4-1 in their Premier League opener. Brighton have also lost Robert Sanchez to Chelsea and Alexis MacAllister to Liverpool.
Brighton may use some of that money from the Caicedo deal to reinvest in the Cameroonian midfielder now that discussions for Baleba are underway.
Brighton have already failed to sign Ajax Mohammed Kudus, who West Ham also wants. Argentine left-back Valentin Barco of Boca Juniors is also a target for them.
