Right backs are one of the most important players in any team. In the Premier League, where the competition is much higher, they play a crucial role in strengthening the defense.
That said, the EPL has some of the best right backs in Europe from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier, Kenny Tete to William Saliba.
Interesting Football looks at the best right backs in the Premier League this season according to Sofascore ratings.
Kieran Trippier (7.74)
Keiran Trippier has been in good form for Newcastle United since he arrived at St James’s Park from Atletico Madrid last year. The English defender is one of the key players in Eddie Howe’s squad.
Trippier has moved from being a defender to one of the team’s leaders and the charge to return the good old days at St James’s Park.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (7.27)
Although Liverpool has been unable to find their footing this season, Trent Alexander-Arnold has remained the best in his position. The 24-year-old has been a core part of Jurgen Klopp’s team, from the youth team to the first team.
Most notably, last season, Arnold was a key player in the defense and was eventually voted into the UEFA Team of the season for 2021/22 following his performance throughout the campaign. He was also in the PFA team of the season.
One area that has overshadowed Liverpool’s campaign has been consistency despite the changes in the team.
Kenny Tete (7.13)
Kenny Tete is one of the greatest revelations of the English Premier League this season. The Dutch footballer who plays for Fulham had an outstanding performance in the EFL Championship that helped the Cottagers earn promotion to the top flight.
In the 2022/23 season, Kenny Tete has been outstanding for the team to the extent that head coach Marco Silva hails his contributions. The 27-year-old Dutchman is one of the less talked about players in the Premier League.
One of the most notable performances of Tete for Fulham was the 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge on February 4th, 2023. He is said to have kept Chelsea’s new signing Mikhailo Mudryk quiet first. Tete won 10 duels, won four fouls and made seven crosses, and was awarded the Man of the match.
Diogo Dalot (7.0
Supercharged by the arrival of Erik ten Haag, Diogo Dalot has transformed into a defensive stalwart for Man United. The Portuguese, alongside Raphael Varane and Lisandra Martínez, successfully built a rock-solid defense for the red side of Manchester.
One of the areas that distinguish Diogo Dalot from other Premier League right-backs is that he is more of an attack-minded player and is capable of making offensive runs when necessary.
According to statistics, Dalot is one of the players that produces the most progressive passes per 90 minutes. Even though he is inconsistent in goalscoring, he’s found the bank of the net occasionally. Most importantly, his contribution has been a game-changer for Man United.
Serge Aurier (7.1)
Serge Aurier has been impressive at Nottingham Forest this season. The Ivorian switched to the Northamptonshire-based club at the start of the 2022/23 season.
Even though there’d been cracks lately, he’s been able to make the numbers with the few contributions to the club as they bid to stay afloat in the league beyond next season.
Ethan Pinnock (6.98)
The secret to Brentford’s success in the English Premier League is teamwork, and Ethan Pinnock is one of the players behind it. The Jamaican is good at right back and the central defense.
Although Pinnock is an excellent addition to the defense for the Bees, he’s been quite outstanding in setting up goals for the forwards and sometimes finds the back of the net himself.
This season, Brentford boss Thomas Frank has counted on the brilliance of the Jamaican and his teammates to maintain their position in the top half of the Premier League table.
Ben White (6.96)
Benjamin White is one of the most outstanding players at Arsenal and has been key to the club’s form in the league.
Although initial questions were raised over the club’s decision to splash £50 million for his services from Brighton in 2021, he has been able to live up to expectations.
Ben White is a ball-playing defender, a utility player who can play as a centre-back or fullback. This season, he has been deployed at right-back by head coach Mikel Arteta, and he has not failed to deliver on it.
William Saliba (6.96)
William Saliba is arguably one of the best Arsenal players this season. His form for Arsenal has been helpful amid the club’s desire to lift the trophy after years of wait.
He was outstanding in the French Ligue 1 with Marseille last season and was awarded the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year award.
This season, Saliba has replicated the same form in the French Ligue 1 at Arsenal, earning a permanent position in the first team as Mikel Arteta entrusts the right-back duties to the Frenchman.
Cristian Romero (6.95)
Despite the ups and downs this season, Cristian Romero has maintained his improvement form for the Spurs.
He has been decent for Spurs this season, especially as a centre-back. He is good at making good passes and ball clearance.
Ashley Young (6.92)
Former Manchester United defender Ashley Young is one of the shining lights at Aston Villa as he’s been influential at Villa Park under Unai Emery.
Despite his age, he has continued to gather considerable numbers, according to statistics in the defense for Villa. However, he is faced with competition with Matty Cash.
