The club is the record winner of the three major domestic competitions in the country, which include the Primeira Liga, Taça de Portugal, and Taça da Liga. However, the club has recorded some of the most embarrassing results in history.

Penarol was the better side in the final 2nd leg encounter at the Centenario in Montevideo. The Uruguayan football giants scored five goals to overturn the first-leg defeat at Benfica.

 

Borussia Dortmund 5-0 SL Benfica (Dec 4, 1963)

 

Borussia Dortmund is among the first teams to hand Benfica its heaviest defeat in Europe. The Yellow Wall scored five goals in the last 16 2nd leg of the European Cup.

 

Dortmund was four goals ahead in the first half before sealing the game with two additional goals in the second half.

 

Benfica 0-5 FC Porto (Sep 18, 1996)

The two giants met at the 1997 Supertaça (Super Cup). The Dragons won the encounter by Scot five goals 9th trophy.

 

FC Porto 5-0 Benfica (Nov 7, 2010)

 

The O Clássico is one of the biggest rivalries in European football, contested by FC Porto and Benfica, The Big Three in Portuguese football, and Sporting CP.

Silvestre Varela opened the scoring for the hosts in the 12th minute before Colombian forward Radamel Falcao registered a quick double to extend the lead. Brazilian star Hulk scored two late goals to complete Porto’s rout over Benfica.

 

FC Basel 5-0 Benfica (Sep 27, 2017)

 

Benfica’s 5-0 thrashing by FC Basel is the club’s biggest loss in the UEFA Champions League. The match was played at St. Jakob Park.

 

Michael Lang gave the host just two minutes from kickoff. Dimitri Oberlin extended the lead in the 20th minute. However, the Portuguese side could contain the scoreline until the break.

 

Ricky van Wolfswinkel inflicted more misery on the visitors after scoring from the spot 14 minutes into the second half. Dimitri Oberlin completed his double, and Blas Riveros completed the rout on the 76th. Benfica finished the game with ten men after André Almeida was sent off.

 

RC Celta de Vigo 7-0 Benfica (Nov 25, 1999)

 

RC Celta de Vigo is the club that handed Benfica their heaviest defeat in history after the encounter ended on a 7-0 scoreline. The two sides met in the 3rd round 1st leg of the UEFA Cup (now the Europa League).

 

German football legend Jupp Heynckes led the Eagles.

Nineteen minutes after kickoff, Valeriy Karpin gave the Spanish side the lead after Gustavo López was fouled. Claude Makélélé increased Celta’s lead in the 30th minute before Mario Turdó extended the lead to three goals.

 

The Sky Blues went into the game with four goals and headed home for the home side just four minutes before the break. Three more goals in the second half were enough to hand Benfica a humiliating historical defeat.
