Bayern’s awful run in Bundesliga continues with a 1-0 loss to Augsburg
Bayern Munich continued their awful Bundesliga run with a 1-0 loss at Augsburg. The German champions are currently winless four games after starting the season with three straight victories.
Julian Nagelsmann’s team are now three points off the top spot after rival Borussia Dortmund defeated Schalke. Union Berlin and SC Freiburg are ahead but still have a game in hand.
A breakaway shot into the ground by Florian Niederlechner warmed Manuel Neuer’s fingers and set the tone for a ferocious first half. At the opposite end, Sadio Mane and Leroy Mane had quick-fire opportunities, but Rafal Gikiewicz could stop both. Then Sane guided a cross from Alphonso Davies wide of the far post.
Early in the second halves, Goretzka and Sadio Mane tried their luck from a distance but to no avail. Iago sent a deep free-kick in Mergim Berisha’s direction, who easily sidefooted home from 10 yards to put the hosts ahead.
The Augsburg keeper made a brilliant stop to deny Sane a one-on-one opportunity, as well as the subsequent clearance attempt that was unintentionally pushed goalward by substitute Serge Gnabry. For a Bayern team that was getting more and more desperate, Neuer went up for a late corner, but Gikiewicz blocked his goal-bound header.
Augsburg moves up to 11th in the Bundesliga with this win over Bayern, while Bayern slips to fourth. Augsburg’s second straight victory over Bayern following a 2-1 triumph last year.
