Bayern Munich biggest wins – Top 5 victories
As the most successful club in the history of German football, it is inevitable that Bayern Munich have achieved some handsome victories in their time. However, of their five biggest wins, only one has been in the Bundesliga, the others have come in cup competitions, and regional leagues.
DJK Waldberg 1 Bayern Munich 16 German Cup 1997
Village team Waldberg achieved quite a coup when they qualified for the first round of the German Cup in 1997. Unfortunately for them, they drew Bayern in the first round, and were utterly routed in front of their home fans.
Carsten Jancker scored five in a match that was played in Nuremberg to attract more spectators. It remains the record score in a German cup match.
Bremer SV 0 Bayern Munich 12 German Cup 2021
Another first round tie in the German Cup (by tradition Bundesliga teams always play away at the stage of the competition).
Regional side Bremer, though, were no match for their visitors from Munich, with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting helping himself to four goals, whilst teenager Jamal Musiala helped himself to a brace.
There were five other individual scorers for Bayern, whilst Bremer did not help their cause with an own goal.
Bayern Munich 11 SV Viktoria Aschaffenburg 0, Oberliga Süd 1948
It was not until the 1963 – 1964 season that the Bundesliga was formed. Prior to that German football had consisted of regional leagues, composed of mainly amateur players.
The match against fellow Bavarian team Viktoria Aschaffenburg in 1948 was once such game, with Bayern thrashing the visitors by eleven goals without reply.
However, the fact that only 1,200 fans watched the game gives a hint as to its overall significance.
Bayern Munich 11 Borussia Dortmund 1, Bundesliga 1971
Nowadays the matches between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund – Der Klassiker (The Classic) – area highlight of the German domestic calendar. However, in 1971, the travelling support had an afternoon to forget as they were thrashed 11 – 1 in the league at the home of their great rivals.
It remains Bayern’s biggest ever Bundesliga victories, and their scorers that day include men who are part of Bayern folklore. Gerd Müller – Der Bomber – grabbed five, whilst Uli Hoeness scored a brace, whilst captain Franz Beckenbauer scored one and provided two assists.
Also finding the net was Paul Breitner, who along with Müller and Beckenbauer – was to play a pivotal role as West Germany lifted the World Cup three years later.
Bayern Munich 10 Anorthosis Famagusta 0 UEFA Cup 1983
In the 1983 – 1984 season, Bayern had qualified for the UEFA Cup, where they drew the Cypriot team Anorthosis Famagusta in the first round.
Bayern already had a one goal lead from the first game played in Cyprus, and, kin the reverse fixture, displayed no mercy against their hapless opponents.
They were seven up by half-time, with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge helping himself to a hat-Trick, and Klaus Augenthaler scoring twice.
Although they eased off in the second half, they still added three more, the last of which enabled Augenthaler to complete his own hat-trick.
