Despite starting on a strong foot, Atletico Madrid gave up their early lead as Real Madrid came from behind to win the tie in extra time.
Alvaro Morata’s strike in the 19th minute gave the Rojiblancos an early lead in the tie which lasted until the 79th minute before substitute Rodrygo equalized for the home side.
A resurgent performance saw two goals from Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior to finish the tie on a strong note. The loss for the visitors meant finishing the season blank following their elimination from the Champions League group stages.
According to Fichajes, Diego Simeone whose contract with Atletico Madrid ends in 2024 could depart the club at the end of the season to pave the way for a new manager. The Argentine has played a significant role in the club since he arrived in 2011.
