Arsenal beat Man City to lift Community Shield; the sweet revenge
Arsenal’s sweet revenge.
It seemed that Cole Palmer would remember the fight for the Community Shield ahead of the 2023/24 season for a long time.
That his goal from the 77th minute will bring the trophy to the club that he has supported since he was a child, of which he has been a member since the age of eight.
However, luck looked at Arsenal, so Leandro Trossard won extra time in the last seconds, and then Kevin De Bruyne hit the crossbar, and Aaron Ramsdale saved Rodri’s attempt from the penalty spot, and with four penalties, the Gunners defeated Manchester City and won the trophy – 1:1 (penalties 4:1).
Arsenal definitely showed more in the first half. City seriously struggled to create a more likely chance, although, of course, they had the ball at their feet more often (63 – 37 percent).
The Gunners were more direct, but Ortega was in high spirits. He took down two goal chances for Havertz. First in the 25th minute, and then in the 40th minute.
The Gunner striker found himself in a very promising situation on both occasions, but it must be admitted that adequate realization was lacking.
City’s goalkeeper was well positioned, the German representative did not have time to adjust, but on both occasions, he sent the ball straight to the countryman from City’s goal.
And then, in the middle of the second half, after several changes on both sides – City takes the lead.
And that after the combination of two players who came off the bench. Quick transition of Citizens, Kevin De Bruyne was determined to employ Cole Palmer in front of the rival’s penalty area.
He succeeded, the young Englishman set himself up for a shot and sent an undefended shot into Arsenal’s net from the edge of the penalty area.
It seemed then that Manchester City would easily bring the match to an end. However, referee Stuart Atwell extended the match by as many as 11 minutes, although the official added time was eight.
And it was in the last seconds of the match that Leandro Trossard sent the ball towards Ortega’s goal, it caught a City player and deflected into the net.
That’s how the winner was decided after a series of penalty kicks, and Arsenal players did better there.
Ødegaard, Trossard, Saka and the scorer of the decisive penalty, Vieira, scored in that order. On the other side, only Silva was accurate, and De Bruyne and Rodri missed.
