Apology to Wolves for not awarding a penalty against United
A big dust-up arose at the end of the Premier League match between Manchester United and Wolverhampton.
The guests considered that the penalty damaged them, as VAR did not support that decision. And that the referees seem to have made a mistake is perhaps shown by the decision that the referees responsible for this situation will not judge next weekend.
The disputed situation happened in the penalty area of United when Onana brought down Sasa Kalajdzic. However, neither the referee on the field nor the referees from the VAR room considered that it was a penalty.
Wolves manager Gary O’Neill says Jonathan Moss – the official in charge – apologized to him for not awarding a penalty. “It’s brave from Jonathan for coming out and saying it was a clear and obvious mistake and he can’t believe the referee on the pitch didn’t award it and the VAR didn’t intervene. It also probably made me feel worse – when you know you’re right, it’s even worse that you got nothing and now you can’t do nothing about it.” Finally, O’Neal said that he was proud of the effort and play of his boys. “We deserved at least a point”.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Haag was not satisfied with his team’s performance in the 1:0 win over Wolverhampton at the start of the Premier League.
“I think we can be much better with the ball at our feet. We proved it last season and during the preparations, but again, it can be seen that the preparatory games are not the same as the competitive ones. When the league starts, the opponents are more aggressive, and we saw that from Wolverhampton – they were extremely aggressive”, the Dutch expert talked about the disputed situation at the end of the match, when the guests thought they should have received a penalty. “It is up to the referee and VAR. I think two of their players collided, and Andre (Onana, United’s goalkeeper) did not get involved in that action. First there was the contact with the ball, I think Dawson’s, and only then Andre.”
The Wolves played an excellent match and were extremely dangerous in transition. The realization was missing, which will probably be the biggest problem after the transfer of Raul Jimenez to Fulham, but Wolverhampton was not afraid at the Theater of Dreams.
He showed his willingness to fight with one of the favorites for the title, but also that he possesses profound qualities. As for the Red Devils, the general impression is that they will have to do much better.
In the second round, United will visit Tottenham, and Wolves will welcome Brighton.
