Major League Soccer currently has some of the best stadiums globally. It is due to the basic requirements of the MLS for clubs to have soccer-specific stadiums suitable for the league.

 

 

As Major League Soccer set its target to become a big-league globally from 2022, the standard level of the stadiums across the league would play a key role.

 

From New York Red Bulls to Los Angeles Galaxy, we took a closer look at the best stadiums across the United States’ top-tier professional soccer league.

 

The 2022 MLS soccer season is scheduled to be the 27th edition. The new soccer season will include the addition of Charlotte FC as an expansion club.

 

We highlight every Major League Soccer stadium by capacity from biggest to smallest for the 2022 season.

1. Bank of America Stadium

The Bank of America Stadium will be the original home for the newly created MLS expansion team Charlotte Football Club.

 

The Bank of America Stadium was opened in 1996 as Ericsson Stadium before the Bank of America purchased the naming rights. The stadium has several unique features, making it one of the best in the MLS.

 

Its external features include three substantial main entrances and six light domes.

 

2. Mercedes-Benz Stadium

The Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium that was opened in 2017.

 

It currently serves as the home stadium of Atlanta United FC. It has 42,500 for soccer (Expandable to 71,000 and 73,019).

 

It is one of the biggest in Major League Soccer which can accommodate over 73,000 fans.

 

3. Nissan Stadium

It is one of the unique stadiums in the United States by sitting arrangements. It features up to three levels of seating, such as the lower bowl and upper classes.

 

4. Lumen Field

The Lumen Field is a multi-purpose stadium located in the neighbourhood of Seattle. It serves as the home ground for the NFL side Seattle Seahawks and the Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer.

 

Opened in 2002, it has gone through a series of name changes from Qwest Field in June 2004 to CenturyLink Field and its current name as the Lumen Field.

 

It is one of the best stadiums with the most modern facilities in the MLS. It also provides avenues for other purposes, such as a parking garage and a public plaza. It can also be used as a venue for concerts, trade shows, etc.

 

5. Gillette Stadium

The Gillette Stadium was opened in 2002. It has a seating capacity of 65,878. It also supports other social activities.

It has undergone a series of innovations and has been used for major soccer competitions like the USA 1994 FIFA World Cup, USA 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

In 2012, the stadium received numerous awards like the Project of the Year by the International Stadium Business Awards.

 

8. Yankee Stadium

9. BMO Field

The BMO Field is one of the best stadiums in Canada. It is an outdoor stadium tome to Toronto FC and the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.

 

It was first opened in 2007. As part of plans to bring an MLS expansion to Canada, the Toronto City Council and the Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment collaborated to reconstruct a standard stadium with a unique approach to support soccer matches.

 

The BMO Field is one of the few soccer-specific stadiums in the MLS. Although it now serves as the home field for Canadian Football games.

 

It has played host to several soccer matches, including the MLS Cup final, FIFA U-20 World Cup, and FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

 

Some of the stadia features include an upper deck to the east grandstand, new roofing covering the seating areas, and alteration of the playing field to support Canadian Football matches.

 

10. Dignity Health Sports Park

The Disney Health Sports Park is one of the first stadiums to host Major League soccer matches in the United States.

 

It is a multiple-use sports complex located at California State University, Dominguez Hills in Carson, California.

 

It is also used for tennis events, track, and field. It is currently the original home for the MLS most successful side LA Galaxy.

 

The Disney Health Sports Park is the largest soccer-specific stadium in the U.S. and the second-largest after the BMO Field.

 

11. TQL Stadium

14. Red Bull Arena

The Red Bull Arena features one of the most attractive designs in the United States, including a transparent partial roof.

 

The transparent roof extends 120 feet (37 m) from the last row of seats to just past the field’s touchlines.

 

The New York Red Bulls is part of the Red Bull soccer empire which includes other notable names like RB Leipzig in Germany, RB Bragantino in Brazil, and RB Salzburg in Austria.

 

There’s also the Red Bull Arena in Austria which is the home ground for the Red Bull Salzburg soccer team of the Austrian Bundesliga.

 

15. PNC Stadium

The PNC Stadium, formerly the BBVA Stadium, is a famous multi-purpose stadium.

 

Opened in 2012, it serves as the home ground for the Houston Dynamo FC of the MLS and the Houston Dash of the National Women’s Soccer League.

 

It has some unique features, including 34 private suites, 1,100 club seats, Premium Club, dedicated supporters stand, and food court.

 

It also features a faceted facade of expanded metal mesh with orange polycarbonate enclosed entrances.

 

16. Banc of California Stadium

The Blanc of California stadium was opened in 2018. It became the first open-air stadium built in Los Angeles in 1962.

 

It is currently home to the Los Angeles Football Club of Major League Soccer. It has a seating capacity of 22,000 at 34 degrees, which makes it one of the steepest stadiums present in MLS.

 

Other unique features include a walkway, plaza, parking space, press box suites, removable stage for use during concerts, a 190,000 square feet (18,000 m2) of ETFE film roof.

 

17. Q2 Stadium

The Q2 Stadium is a soccer-specific stadium currently home to MLS side Austin FC who joined the league in 2021 as an expansion franchise.

The Toyota Stadium is a soccer-specific stadium with a 20,500 seat capacity. It was opened in 2005 and is currently used by MLS side FC Dallas.

It has played host to numerous soccer competitions in the United States. It is currently home to the National Soccer Hall of Fame (NSHOF).

 

19. Lower.com Field

The Lower.com Field is a soccer-specific stadium currently the home stadium of the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer.

 

It was previously known as the New Crew Stadium before the stadium’s opening. Owned by the Columbus Crew, it has a capacity of 20,371 and other facilities like 30 suites and 1,900 club seats.

 

Since October 2021, it has hosted some United States Men’s Soccer National Team 2022 World Cup Qualifier matches.

 

20. Rio Tinto Stadium
