Globally, the NHL is the top-ranked professional ice hockey league. Similar to other major professional leagues in the United States, the league champions of the NHL are awarded the Stanley Cup at the end of postseason playoffs.
The NHL was founded in 1917, and its first campaign was the 1917–18 season.
