Their rivalry dates back to the 12th century. As it was described, a property belonging to Bresciano Giovanni Brusati was purchased by the City of Bergamo in 1126.
However, the Emperor Federico I Barbarossa overturned the sale and ordered it to be returned to Brescia. This led to an outbreak of war in 1156.
