Real Madrid won on penalties to clinch the Spanish Super Cup in Jeddah City and becomes the first club to win the trophy in it’s be phase.
The two teams could not penetrate each other even the game lasted for a whole ninety without a goal. Real Madrid were upright on the night, however, it was a different experience for Atletico who had some injury worries on some key players even a Simeone had to convert midfielders to attackers.
What caused Atletico Madrid to fall
It looked as if Real Madrid had the game all to themselves more especially in the second half. Atletico played like a team with no second option, a plan B.
No disrespect to world class Argentine manager Diego Simeone, but his team lacked the plan B idea. Atletico Madrid virtually waited for Real Madrid to make the moves towards them, all Atletico did was to turn their defence into counter attacks.
Atletico left Madrid to do all the attacks while they were busy doing the counter attacks.
Why the game could not be decided after 90 minutes of play
The two teams were playing safe even as they regularly go on to attack each other. Real Madrid had legendary captain and defender Sergio Ramos at the back, dictating for the front liners.
Atletico Madrid on other hand were relying on team play. It was a brutal affair even as Real Madrid ended the game with 10 men after Valverde was sent off
Someone used the same tactical approach that work against Barcelona, putting Joao Felix and Alvaro Morata upfront. The Four Four Two formation really worked well for Simeone but it was really difficult to break a resistive Real side who had Ramos at the back even as Zidane played the Pyramid style formation.
Diego Costa missing
No Costa, the Spaniard was ruled out of the Spanish Super Cup due to injury. He missed the game against Barcelona and now in the final against Real Madrid.
No Benzema, Real Madrid still won the trophy
Arguably Real Madrid’s best attacker at the moment, Karim Benzema was ruled out due to injury alongside Eden Hazard. In his absence, Luka Jovic was the lone striker upfront at least a moral booster for the former Hoffeinheim hitman.
How Real Madrid won it
Real Madrid had all there penalty kicks right in the back of the net. However, Courtois saved two spot kicks to become the hero on the night. From Zero to Hero.
